Wraps

What material do you prefer? I figured id get a woven wrap because that's all I knew existed. I looked at gauze ones today at the local natural parenting store. It seemed like a better option for me because it's humid here in the spring and summer, and my child is a hot box. Are gauze wraps just as safe?

Re: Wraps

  • Me again :)

Gauze wraps are just as safe and can be used for any carry including back carries.  Because they are thin you do have to wrap more carefully to avoid pressure points but I've comfortably used them with even toddlers.  They won't be as soft as a woven but certainly cool.

There are lots of thin woven wraps as well - I personally think starting with an all cotton wrap is the way to go although some like linen blends (they are a bit harder to wrap with IMO).  Vatanai and Ellaroo are two thin brands...there are thin wraps by many other brands as well including Didymos.

Really I think the best thing to do is find a wrap you love the look of and then ask around to see what it's like (thin, thick, etc)...and then go from there!

BTW- I consigned one of my RS and bought my first MT today. I decided to start with that since wraps intimidate me so much! haha. I LOVE the MT though! And LO does to. (We're starting to have problems with the RS's because he'll stretch up and pop his seat, or suddenly lurch to the side and it freaks me out.) He hung out in the new MT for almost 3 hours today while I got stuff done around the house.  I'm not a very good sewer, but I'm looking at tablecloths on amazon and thinking about trying to DIY one over spring break. (another BTW- I saw that you're on the babwearing DIY FB group. haha!)

  • I was looking at wraps online last night, they seem very expensive for a long piece of material. Can you just buy a long piece of material?

From what I understand, the ends of the wraps are angled. I know there are a lot of people that make their own. There are tutorials on the Babywearing DIY Advice and Support group on FB about how long they should be and how to sew them.
