Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby sick-ish, not eating - WWYD?

LO is 8.5 months and seems to have a cold.  She has a runny nose and a periodic cough.  I called the pedi just because RSV has been going around but the nurse said it didn't sound like she had much of anything and as long as she was breathing easily there wasn't much to do.

But she has only been eating about half her usual amount for two full days now - maybe 12 oz of formula and some small servings of solids.  I know laying down and drinking is hard because it gets her coughing, so we're trying to feed her sitting up but I don't know what else to do.  She also seems to be playing more with her ear today (right ear).

How do you get a baby to eat when they're not feeling great?  Any remedies for overall yuckiness?

  • WIll she take straw sippy cup?  DS has been sick all week and he seems more comfortable drinking out of his sippy cup than tilting his head for a bottle. Hope she feels better quickly.

  • My LO is suffering her first cold and her appetite has diminished too.  We've been feeding her less, but more often.  Seems to be working.

As far as comfort during this helpless time, we've got a humidifier that we run on full blast and Infant Tylenol at bedtime.

    Let's hope this passes quickly.

  • Thanks, everyone - we actually ended up at urgent care tonight because the doctor could not see her this afternoon.  They did a swab for RSV but we won't know until tomorrow, but she does have an ear infection and more snot/boogers than anyone could believe.  Her lungs, however, are clear.

So in addition to  ibuprophen and antibiotics (and a humidifier and orders for saline and lots of nasal suctioning!) the doctor said we need to be giving her pedialyte INSTEAD of formula because at this point hydration is more important than calories.  I guess I'll try to increase solids for a few days???  We're still supposed to try to get her to drink formula, but wow.  Poor little peanut.
