So LO is very young for potty training, but I wanted to get him one
sooner rather than later so he can start sitting on it and getting
comfortable. Some of the potties look adorable and I am sure LO would
love some of the features (cool noises when flushing, lighting up, etc)
but they aren't very good for boys. When I've looked at reviews they
have said the splash guard sucks and their baby would get his pee
everywhere since they actually smooshed his genitals into an awkward
position when he peed. Any suggestions for a good potty for boys? I
would love one with some of the cool features but obviously fit is most
important!

Honestly once we started having him try standing (on a stool) he did 100% better but he was also 3 yrs old.
We have the bjorn seat and it was fine for us when he would pee on it. I really can't imagine PTing a 1 yr old esp a boy but GL.
I've purchased three different pottys and this is the only one that DS doesn't pee right over the top of the splash guard.

This - we have Bjorn ones and they are great.
This on for a little potty. The splash guard it great and it will make noises when he pees or poops in it- https://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Ducky-Fun-3-in-1-Potty/dp/B003G2YUTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362056397&sr=8-1&keywords=Ducky+potty
and this one as a potty seat for the big potty. A lot of these seats have really crappy splash guards but this one is great!- https://www.amazon.com/First-Years-Disney-Pixar-Colors/dp/B0010P5Q7Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1362056476&sr=1-1&keywords=cars+potty+seat
We like the Babybjorn seat that sits on the big toilet. Looks like Munchkin is now making a similar one which I'm sure is less expensive.
I never used a little potty with DS1 and don't plan to with DS2 either. Mainly because I always wanted to be able to flush the toilet and not have to clean out oa little potty. We have a short stepstool that we used to help him get on the toilet and he was fine.
I have a good friend who potty trained her daughter before 2 with a little potty and it was a huge ordeal to switch to the big toilet later. She was scared of it. That lead to a lot more cleaning out of the little potty then her mother ever wanted!
