Success after IF

having a 2nd child

My DH and I were unexplained IF and got pg with IUI.  We've been talking about having baby #2.  Ideally we'd like about 3 years apart so in a perfect world, we'd start ttc this fall/winter.  I'm just wondering how long we should try on our own, or if we should just to straight back to our RE.  If you have 2 (or more), what did you do?  Or did anyone get pg on their own?

Re: having a 2nd child

  • We also got pg through IUI our first time around.  I never went back on birth control and made an appointment to see the RE when DD was 6 mo old.  I figured if we needed help the first time, we would most likely need it again.  Well, I ended up getting a surprise BFP that cycle so I guess you never know!  I never went back on bc after our surprise baby either and he is now 9 months old, we've been timing sex perfectly these last few months, etc and nothing so we plan to head back to the RE next month (time isn't on our side with my DOR dx and endo, so I need to crank 'em out quickly if I want a shot at having my 3 dream babies ;)

I say set a time limit.  Start trying on your own when you think you would feel ready for a BFP and if it doesn't happen by your limit, then head back to the RE.

  • I haven been wanting to get KU since my DS turned a year old, he's now 18 months. We get pg with him after my 2nd clomid/iui cycle. After doing all the testing, I was supposed to cycle with clomid/iui this last month but I had a cyst.

Because we are mfi I doubt we will ever get pg on our own which really is sad because we want 4 kids. I think for everyone it's different but for me I wanted to run back to the re ASAP as I know I'll never get pg on my own.

  • We are unexplained but were in a different situation when it came time to TTC again. We had to do two IVF cycles before having DS so we had frozen embies left over. We wanted to use those so we went straight to the RE and did a FET. I think it is a personal decision, but when dh and I were serious about TTC again we would have started with what worked the first time.

  • How long you decide to TTC on your own is completely up to you. We decided to go right back to the RE as soon as AF returned then ended up getting pregnant in our own.

  • Well, I am not TTC again yet and we have not decided how long to wait  before trying.  I am also DOR so I recently had some drawn to see where I am (with FSH and AMH) and we are going to make the decision on how long to wait based on how those labs come back.  It is such an individual decision, it is hard to say.  If my labs came back better or no worse than last time, we will probably wait about a year and then TTC again on our for at least a few months.  However, if they came back worse, we might move up our plans or even consider doing IVF and freezing embryos.  But I'm in an entirely different boat than you because DOR potentially gets worse over time and no one seems to know how quickly it can get worse.  If I was in your shoes, I would probably TTC for 3-6 months first and then go back to the RE.  But, again, it really is an individual decision that only you can make.

  • We tried ourselves for 3 cycles & then went back to our RE.  We knew our situation was not going to get better, but we thought we would give it a try for a few cycles none the less.  You could try yourselves until the fall & then go back to your RE if you have no luck during that time.  GL!

  • We planned to not prevent until we were absolutely ready for our BFP and always thought we would have to go back to our RE bc of our combo of problems. We were on the mini pill for about 6months while BF DS then stopped. We got a surprise BFP but had blighted ovum. We went back to RE after the mc and are planning on IVF in April/May.

I agree with PP, try until fall/winter and make an apt with your RE then if you need it. GL!

  • We needed IVF for DD, since one of my tubes is blocked, and time is not on my side.  Luckily it worked on the first try for us.  Since we knew we wanted 2, my RE and OB both recommended trying pretty much ASAP, since I was already 39 when DD was born.

We tried on our own for a couple of months once AF returned, and while waiting to cycle, but I starting cycling when DD was 5 months old, and we were fortunate to be successful on our first try again.

  • I have PCOS. DD is turning 2 months this weekend. I think we will start trying on our own here next month. We don't believe I will get PG, but we would like it to happen. We will probably go back to the RE around June of next year. We would go sooner, but my RE is 2 hours away, and we'd like to avoid the winter months if possible this time. ;-)

  • DH had low motility and I have one tube and I either wasn't ovulating or I ovulated spontaneously. Got DD after 2 IVF and 1 FET. I breastfeed for about a year. We decided to wean so we could start FET 2. Well, while waiting for my second AF after weaning and right before our second RE appt. we got pregnant naturally! Still didn't see ultrasound yet but blood test confirmed. Unexplained fertility has a higher chance of spontaneous pregnancy. Just stay healthy but if you are really trying to space it wait a while.
