Natural Prenatals?

Hi all,

I'm wanting to start taking prenatals in prep for TTC.  Alot of the brands that I have looked at have dyes and artificial coloring. What gives? I don't want any of that in my vitamins, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions for brands that they like and have used.  Affordable is always a plus.

Thanks!

Re: Natural Prenatals?

  • I take Rainbow Light and love them. No artificial colors, dyes, preservatives, sugar, or gluten. They are a little on the more expensive side I believe, but you can usually get them off Amazon for a little cheaper.

  • I've had this product bookmarked for a couple of years and should try them this time. I had heard good things about it, a whole food vitamin.

A couple intersting items to note - it includes folate, not folic acid, and I purposely seek out folate as it's more used by your body than folic acid. And thumbs up for fermented soy...the only healthy soy to eat.  I like that it includes herbs too. I think I'll finally order some!  It's on amazon as well in various sizes, with 4.5 stars.

I'd also be intersted in this one, Garden of Life Prenatal. Click the box on the right side for the nutritional contents.

  • I was taking Rainbow Light until I read how much lead they have in them:

    https://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/FoodContaminantsAdulteration/Metals/Lead/ucm115941.htm

I switched to New Chapter Perfect Prenatals.

ETA: Also, Rainbow Light is still using some GMOs in their products. https://www.rainbowlight.com/about-us-faqs.aspx

I just read on several low amazon reviews that New Chapter was purchased by Proctor  & Gamble last year...not a company you think of when you think of natural. Have your heard about that?  I'm thinking of going ahead and getting them as I *do* think P&G owns stuff but doesn't necessarily always change the formulas.  I like what I see on the product website.

Yes, I did read that, and it definitely gave me pause. If I had a better option, I probably would have jumped at it, but these seemed to be the best of the bunch at present without completely breaking the bank. I am hoping that P&G just wants to expand into this demographic, but am not optimistic that the quality will remain as high. Sigh.

The other one I linked above looked like a good option, for about $9 more per bottle (for the 180 or 192) than New Chapter. I wish it had the herbs in it though, but I like everything else. Had you looked at that and not like it as well?  (not sure what all you look for in a prenatal). Let me know what you think.

  • I've decided to get New Chapter, despite the P&G association. I realized how many organic and natural companies I freely buy from are owned by large companies (Muir Glen, Cascadian Farms, Stoneyfield Farms, to name a couple) and I do think these subsidiaries can continue to run as they ran before with the ingredients still being good.
  • Look up "Innate". Completely whole-food, no fillers, no crap and vegan too.
  • I've taken New Chapter since 60-days pre IVF.

I also take their Prenatal Fish Oil. :)

  • I also did/do Trader Joe's PNVs. They had less on some things than my midwife wanted, so I also supplement with Vit D, calcium, magnesium, B complex, and fish oil

  • I use New Chapter. And I LOVE them. They are whole food. which was important to me. Also the company is pretty great https://www.newchapter.com/difference

They are a little bit more expensive. I get them on Amazon though... and it doesn't end up being too bad. Also, the pills are a little larger and you have to take three a day. This was a big problem for me at first since I'm not great at swallowing pills. but 7 months later... super easy now.

another benefit: you can take these on an empty stomach. any time of day!

  • I love Rainbow Light!  I take their one-a-days.  They are on sale at target for 7.99 for 50 tablets!  Usually they are 9.99.

  • Oh dear Lord - there's LEAD in prenatals??!  Never would have thought to look for that.  It's in my daughter's multivitamin, too.  Thanks for the heads up.  Of course I just bought a TON of my vitamin b/c of the sale.  Boo.

  • I take Mega Foods Prenatal. I love them. I got them at Whole Foods, but you can buy multiple bottles on Amazon for a little cheaper.
  • Baby and Me is the best you can possibly get.. Idk what you would consider affordable but check them out!!!!
  • Also a New Chapter patron, here. I also do Nordic Naturals omega 3s, papaya extract chews to help with heartburn and D13 from https://www.naturalhealthyconcepts.com/.

       WTF

I'm sort of confused by that table.  Am I reading it right: Rainbow Light still has less than a quarter of how much lead is recommended exposure per day?

     Still disturbing...

Since New Chapter isn't in that study, how do you know how much lead is in those?

    This creeps me out...

  • I take Rainbow Lite one a day prenatals. They F-ing rock and they do not make me nauseous. You can get them at Whole Foods for $41, or online for $32. Super cheap, considering the high quality of the product and the fact that 150 come in a bottle.
  • My naturopath said Thorne was the best brand, it's what I use
