Cool mist humidifiers dr says no

DS had his 6 mo well check yesterday. When I mentioned to the doctor that I keep a cool mist humidifier on in DS's room every night, she said that "they" are now getting away from recommending cool mist humidifiers because they cause dust in the air that can irritate babies. I guess she was saying it could irritate their noses, breathing, etc. Anyone else been told this? I was surprised.

  • I haven't been told that but I know for me, I'm seriously allergic to dust mites and my allergy doctor told me years ago to avoid a humidifier in my room or house because mites thrive in a humid environment.  So maybe that's what your pedi is thinking of?

  • I have not been told that. I will still use our humidifier though because LO was getting bloody noses like hubby does from the dry air. Since we've used the humidifier she doesn't get bloody noses and doesn't seem irritated by anything from the air so I'm happy with it.

  • This doesn't make any sense.  Water doesn't cause dust but assuming she meant it kicks up dust (vs creates it) I still don't buy it.  You disrupt more dust just by walking through a room.  The thing you DO have to be careful of is keeping it clean.  Bacteria can build up in those things like crazy and end up causing more harm than good if you don't stay on top of it.

Maybe that's her reasoning. I would imagine a lot of people DON'T keep them clean like they should.

  • I found that cool mist humidifiers got gross quicker than the warm mist ones.  I guess with either one, though, they have to be cleaned regularly if you're using them so often.
  • i havent been told that. i never used the cool mist humidifiers but i have use the warm mist to help with my LO stuffy nose.
