Cloth Diapering

Issue adding water to HE FL

Earlier this week I washed a load of diapers using my IL's TL and realized that they came out much cleaner than after several cycles in my FL. So, today, I decided I would add more water to the main wash cycle. When I poured the extra water in through the detergent dispenser, there were tons of suds in the drum of the machine. Like WAY more than what I see when washing our clothes in Tide.

I know it's not my detergent (1 tbsp Nellie's) since I used that much in the TL without crazy suds. I think the liquid detergent that I was using, the liquid detergent our soon-to-be BIL uses, and the detergent used by the previous homeowners has caused buildup in whatever tube/pipe adds the detergent to the drum of the machine.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Any tips on how to clean it out? Anything I can do to prevent this buildup while future BIL still uses liquid detergent?

  • Does your machine have a "drum clean" or similar button? If so, fill up the bleach dispenser, hit that button, and run it (no laundry in the machine).

It has a machine cleaning cycle. Do you think adding the bleach to the detergent dispenser vs the bleach dispenser would help? Since I'm not seeing suds like this when I haven't added extra water through the detergent dispenser, I suspect that part in particular is the problem.

  • The clean cycle has mega suds when I use it the way I described. I think it just blasts a bunch of water through.

I wouldn't worry day-to-day, I'd just run it once a month or so.

I just ran the clean cycle ... I have never seen so many suds! Thanks for your help. I'll have to remember to clean my machine more often.

ETA Now I'm wondering if all that buildup was the reason my dipes weren't getting clean very easily for the past couple weeks. I'll have to go back to my original wash routine next load.

  • I don't actually know if it has any impact on my diapers, but you will say "WHOA!" when you see how many suds you get on a clean cycle.

Yeh, I'd like to know more about adding water through the detergent dispenser...

  • So.. .. I ran it and there were no bubbles. I have to say im kinda sad!

Two times this month our bleach dispenser hasn't emptied all the way. It ruined my good bath towels the first time. The second time I caught it before. I was hoping it was a build up issue [can you have this with the bleach spot?!]. Anyone know how to fix this?

Okay, I just tried it.  I'm prepping diapers today.  I put a bit of Nellie's powder in the detergent slot as usual and started the load.  As soon as I saw the soap wash down into the drum, I re-opened the detergent slot and poured water (from a pitcher) right into the slot.  I could actually see the water cascading down into the drum, which was very cool.

You have to use the detergent slot (and NOT the bleach or softener ones) because the detergent slot empties immediately into the drum and not later in the cycle like bleach.

And now I know how to get extra water into the drum for CD laundry!
