Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How big of a 1st Bday party??

Curious as to what people are planning. I am just now starting to think about a party for DD and really not sure what to do here. Just family? Just us? Friend and Family? Other kids?

What are you all doing / have done?

  • We ran through a number of options, including family only and friends with kids.  We decided that since the first birthday party is really for the parents, we're throwing a big bbq and just inviting everyone.  Hooray for summer babies!

We did decide that on the invite, we're going to put a timeline of events - 2-3pm: kids games, 3pm: cake cutting 4pm: grilling - that way people can plan their visit accordingly.  I imagine my friends with kids will come early and leave after cake, and my friends without kids will come for cake and then stay for drinks and steak.

We're doing mostly family, with a few close friends that have kids around the same age. My husband has a big family, and we're doing it at our house, so kind of had to limit it. Weather can still be iffy in April, but hoping to mostly hang out in the backyard.

  • We decided to do two, low key parties. One for close family, that will probably include presents. And, one with our friends who have little ones, where we put "no gifts" on the invitation.  We didn't one a huge bash where we couldn't actually connect with people...and we didn't want our friends to feel they had to buy our kid a toy (that he certainly doesn't need!)...but we knew our close family would want to bring him a gift. So, two small parties.

We're not doing a theme or anything...just a BBQ and casual open house type gathering.

  • Ours is next weekend. We are expecting roughly 50 people. About half is family and the rest is close friends with kids.

  • We are having one big party of family and friends amounting to 2832 people. We are also having our immediate families over for cake on the night of her birthday

  • We're having a big party. We had ~53 people show up at our house for their baptism last summer. We have big families...My parents are both 1 of 5 kids and DH's dad has 5 siblings.

Since April can be iffy and our house isn't great if the weather isn't nice enough for people to go in the back yard, we rented a lodge in a park. We're probably going to get Qdoba catering and start the party at 12 or 1pm. We'll just serve lunch, do gifts and have cake. We'll probably have a kid table set up with something fun to do for our nieces, nephew, cousins, and any friend's kids!

  • We are doing immediate family only, which will be around 20 people.  We are having a lunch and grilling out, nothing major.  March is a big month for birthdays for our family, so we usually do all birthdays together, but wanted to do something simply for LO.

  • For both my girls we have/or will be doing the following: We have invited family and close friends, which is about 40 people or so. We are having the party at our house, with food, cake, and a craft project for the older kids. And when the older kids aren't eating, doing their craft project, they will most likely be playing in the playroom. The party is really a celebration for our little girl.
