So is my kid the only one that speaks Cantonese?

Because it sounds like everyone else's kids are talking in full sentences. In English. Yeah, so not happening here.

DS can say 10+ words (in English) but that is it, the rest of what comes out of his mouth is clearly in a foreign language. But since he is my second, I am ok with it since I stressed way too much about this ish with DD and now you can't shut her up even with a muzzle. Not that I have tried.

  • Ronin isn't talking at all. Seriously, I'm starting to worry something is wrong with him. Not walking. Not talking, zero words. He babbles a lot and responds when I talk to him so I know he hears , but no talking over here.

with DD our pedi told me not to worry as long as LO seems to understand what you are saying and can follow simple one step and two step commands.

  • DS knows a few words, but mostly just points at things and says "Dah!  Dah!" which I think means "that".  He understands a lot though.  I'm hoping one day he'll just start saying words.

  • I think we only have 4 words here. But they are so rare I question whether I've really heard them at all, or I just want to. He "talks" nonstop, but it definitely doesn't sound like English.

Yeah, that is what my pedi says, but it is hard not to play the comparison game when I see how behind he is compared to others his age.

As someone without any medical training, I agree with your pedi.

I understand DD. I feel like she's saying a lot of things but I wouldn't expect her to walk into a room full of strangers and be understood.

i know, I did it with DD. trust me when I tell you it will happen overnight-- it will be a word explosion. I am waiting for it with DS.

  • Gator says "There she is!" But it comes out as "Dare she is!". Other than that, I think she can say like 10 words but still doesn't put any of the words together. She understands a ton of different words. And then there is tons and tons of babble that comes out of her.

  • DS says 10+ words also, but isn't talking well or in full sentences. He speaks Mandarin over here. Lots of babbles and lots of gibberish.

My DD didn't even say mama until 18 months and didn't start even trying to put sentences together until 2. DS is ahead of her in the word aspect, and I've learned from experience that the rest will come in time. He has amazing comprehension. Follows multiple directions in a row.

I swear the only reason DS say anything is to demand food.  He says more, no, cracker and cookie quite clearly.  He calls all food either cracker or cookie and then gets pissed when we don't guess what he really wants.

He does have a few other words, but doesn't say them as distinctly.  Everything else is complete gibberish.

Thank you for saying this! DD says "more" and "mi (milk)" at dinner all the time and then freaks out when we don't give her the right thing. Like, total meltdown.

My bad, DD. I should have know that when you said, "mi" what you really wanted was the cheese hidden at the back of the fridge.

  • If he is talking in full sentences, it isn't in English that's for sure. He has a couple words, some he says more than others and some he seems to forget and never say again.

OMG ..DD barely speaks but at dinner she points and said this over and over..I thought she was saying Me..but Milk makes sense!!!!

We are mostly "Dah!" here, too. And he does it higher pitched. Sometimes it drives me a bit crazy. Ok, a lot of the time.

  • DD speaks in full sentences.  Unfortunately they are in some ancient dead language.  Maybe she's communicating with a mother ship?

  • Eden can say a TON of words (I've actually counted and it's upwards of 50) but she still sounds like she's from another planet half the time. I seriously think it's the age. Babbling is still fun.

I want to add that that count includes animal sounds as in she responds with, "Moo!" when we ask her what a cow says, and we did absolutely zero to foster this in her besides combine a mama with a big mouth with a daddy who's a book addicted librarian. We take no credit. Still she babbles a lot too.

  • Crystal, we need the gif.

Sophie still says zero actual English words.
  • Hahaha NO. Not the only one.

  • I'll say again that I think some of the stories of  the LOs talking are exaggerated.

DS falls in between. We're in the middle of the first word explosion. He repeats things a lot, but doesn't use them on his own. But he also busts out with new words now and then that completely surprise me, like eggs. But he also thinks all animals say hiss.

She does the exact same growl for bears, lions, tigers, etc. too. No distinction there. I'm glad she's ahead in one thing since she was one of the last to crawl and walk. I was pretty worried but like all things it seems to even out after a bit.

  • DS talks way more than DD did but since I am the only one who can understand him I don't know if we can call it English.
