Yep, it's mastitis

Thanks to all earlier in the week who weighed in on my clogged duct vs. mastitis. My fever spiked and then went away completely by Tuesday, so I thought I was on the mend, but by yesterday, a hard, hot, painful red lump had formed and I got nervous so called my doc. Went in, said it was definitely mastitis, and sent me for an ultrasound to rule out an abscess. Luckily the ultrasound was ok, so now I'm just on antibiotics.

For those of you who've been treated, did your course of antibiotics result in a YI? Kind of dreading that now...

  • I haven't had mastitis, but of course have been on antibiotics before. Eat lots of yogurt (with active cultures) for the probiotics! Hopefully that will help and you feel better soon!

  • Antibiotics wipe out your immune system completely (which is why you can get a yeast infection, it just causes such an imbalance because it gets rid of both good and bad bacteria!).  You can take probiotics at the same time as the antibiotics to try to keep your system healthy and in better balance.  Look up recommendations though because I'm pretty sure you have to space it out a certain way, or wait a certain amount of time after starting the antibiotics.  I can't remember off the top of my head.

  • I am almost done with my antibiotics and no YI yet. I have had yogurt every day in hopes that helps. It ha decreased my milk supply and really had to work on it this week. Nursing in lots of different positions helped too. Good luck, feel better

  • I'm glad it ended up not being an abscess!

This! I just got through with dealing with that. It was the worst. Seriously. Dealing with the mastitis with the abscess was the worst thing I've ever experienced.  I actually had four pockets and my OB said it was the worst case of mastitis she had ever seen. For three weeks, I was going to the breast doctor twice a week. I just got cleared this week to stop the draining and let my incision heal.

Back to your original question - I was on antibiotics for 10 days and I didn't get a YI.
