when did you schedule your first pediatrician appointment?

I hope you ladies don't mind I keep popping over here when I haven't exactly graduated yet!

I was just wondering if I am suppose to schedule the first pediatrician appointment while I am still pregnant or wait untl after the baby is born?

You have to wait until the baby is born. It's an appointment when they are 5 days old, and you won't know that until LO arrives. They will always squeeze you in because that's the standard and they know you need to come in. Our office actually has newborn appointments open each and every day for that reason. HTH!

Wait until they're born. Often the doctor will dictate when to come in (ie a set number of days after birth, or regularly until baby surpasses birthweight). Mine always tells me at the appts when the next one is. They are pretty frequent at first.

This. We had 3 the 1st week home because DS had jaundice. They set it up at the hospital for you.

Wait til the baby is born - the pedi office will get you in. Our first appt was about a week after he was born.

My pedi comes to the hospital when the baby is born and he met with us and told us when we would need to bring the baby in. DD was born just before Christmas and he came on Christmas Eve and told us she needed to come in on the 26th to check for jaundice. He just told us to stop in at 10 am. It all just depends on your baby's needs. Don't worry about it. Things will fall into place.

Agreed. Your hospital will guide u on this and may even call for you. If not u just call and they will get u in within a few days.

They wanted the baby discharged first before putting us on the appt books. They keep open times for newborns.

I let the pedi know what my due date was but didn't schedule an official appointment. When DD was born, the hospital called the pedi. He came in and saw her for an initial evaluation. The hospital would not release DD until the pedi ok'd it.

He came and spoke with me and said that DD was fine and to call and schedule the first appointment for 2 weeks.

Some pedi's will want to see LO within a couple of days and monitor the weight loss and subsequent weight gain. My pedi did not feel the need to do that since they just want to see if LO is back to birth weight by 2 weeks.

Obviously they will want to see LO earlier if there are issues such as jaundice.

A pedi visited us in the hospital and told us when to go. Since DD had jaundice issues we actually had to go the day after we got home from the hospital.
