Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hitting head in crib?

DD is standing and crawling a lot in her crib, and during times we let her cry she almost always ends up falling and hitting her head on the crib rails. It scares me to death! She just fell forward from a sitting position and looked like it bent her neck. She is fine, but I am freaked out. Has anyone else had this problem? Anything I can to do help her not hit her head? Crying it out is tough enough without this added stress!
Due 3.27.14 (lame because I cannot figure out how to save a fun ticker.....)

Re: Hitting head in crib?

  • DS did that a couple times but he eventually stopped. The pedi said some babies hit their head on purpose b/c it is soothing to them. I know it hurts and I always feel awful but they are fine and I don't think there is really anything to do unless you rock her to sleep.

  • As tough as it is now, they eventually learn to be more careful and stop doing it

  • My DS has started banging his head when he is angry & frustrated. He does it on the arm of the couch, the wall, and his crib. It makes me so sad, but I'm not sure how to make him stop. So far he hasn't really hurt himself and I'm assuming it's a phase that will eventually pass (hopefully soon!)

  • Well I guess I'm glad we aren't the only ones dealing with it - poor babies! I'm sure it won't inflict permanent damage, but its hard to watch. Maybe we should shut our monitor off!

Sorry, in my haste I didn't bold. Your pedi said babies hit their head purposefully because it is soothing? This sounds incredibly bizarre to me.

  • Nope head banging is not strange at all.  Read up about it.  Many babies (pre-language abilities) get frustrated and bang their heads out of anger/frustration. It's normal in most cases and kids usually outgrow it.  My ped. said it's a self-soothing behavior.  A bit counter intuitive but normal nonetheless. My 12 month old bangs her head back in her high chair when she's pissed all the time and sometimes bangs her head into the mattress when she's upset.

  • Our little guy does this too, his mattress is at an angle so it's alway happening. It's stinks but he will learn and he is mobile enough to move himself. We feel your pain!

    Wow!

  • Me too...she just started standing on her own, trips and hits her face on the side of the crib on the way down. I'm not sure what to do. I was thinking about adding bumpers but it looks like she is hitting her face above where the bumpers would be. I'm so scared she will use the bumpers to crawl out of the crib.If it gets worse I might let her sleep in  her Joovy play yard because in that when she falls she just hits the mesh walls. hopefully it's just a phase that goes away soon.
