Parenting after a Loss

Mommy Guilt.

Pity party for 1 please.

I had whined about this yesterday on working mom's board.. but, unbeknown to me, my nephew had been home sick at my parents all week with a fever and a terrible cough.

Last night when we got home, DS was more fussy than normal, and he occasionally had a very wet sounding cough :(  Go figure.  He gave me a hard time going down to sleep last night, and tossed and turned a lot through the night.. when I got him up this morning, I knew he wasn't feeling well.. he just whined at me.. when normally he's happy and smiley.

I still came to work.  I hadn't brought my laptop home with me, so I couldn't work from home (and my drive is over an hour and 15 minutes each way, so I couldn't just go pick it up and come back), and DH had a very busy day and couldn't stay home either.

Now, I feel terrible.  I feel like it's my fault that he's sick in the first place.. I should have realized my nephew was sick.. I should have either kept him home with us while my nephew was getting over his sickness, or requested that he be watched at our house.. Ugh.

Beating myself up.

  • Kids get sick. It happens. It's going to happen a lot, either now or when your child starts school.

He's in good hands with your parents I'm sure, and I would find peace of mind knowing there is someone that loves him taking care of him when he's sick.

I would love to have relatives who could care for my kiddo when she's sick so that I wouldn't have to take off from work and could use my days off to do fun things with B instead.

This exactly.  It isn't your fault.  Even SAHM's kids get sick, know what I mean?  It is awesome that your parents can give LO extra attention today.

If it makes you feel any better, DD has the same wet cough and a double ear infection and I dropped her off at her in-home daycare (5 kids).

When you get home, just keep the humidifier on them and give lots of snuggles.

This too. Landon catches all kinds of stuff at DC & I've taken him in when he has been recovering from ear infections & when he's been on allergy meds. Don't feel bad.

I'll second this (or is it third).  I have SAHM friends that their kids are always sick.  It all depends on the kid.

Also, dropped DD off today with a wet cough and snot dripping down her nose.

THIS.  You are doing the best you can.  He got sick.  And now you are taking care of him.  That's all you can do, and I bet he cares way more about you giving him extra snuggles during his recovery, than how he got sick in the first place ;)
