Pincer grasp

Anyone have an suggestions on how i can help DS work on this other than soft finger foods at meal time?

He will kind of grasp things like puffs or he will eat puffs if we feed them to him, but he won't pick up the puffs and put them in his mouth...everything else seams fair game and goes from hand to mouth almost immediately!

OY!

TIA!

Re: Pincer grasp

  • I think it just takes time. DS has been pulling out his paci, passing it back and forth and shoving it back in but he wouldn't grab food. Within the last week he figured out how to grab Cheerios/string cheese or puffs and makes attempts to get it to his mouth. I think it's one if those things that takes time. Why feed yourself when mom will put them in for you? Kwim?

  • My son does this too.  It's strange to me how every other thing in sight goes directly into his mouth, blankets, toys, the cat.... and somehow puffs do not.

I'm sure he'll figure it out.  He does have great success gnawing on mum mums and seems to like those quite a bit.  I suspect it might be a texture thing.  The puffs disolve pretty fast and leave a flavor but the mum mums give him something to really work his sore gums against.

  • Here is a good site.  https://spoonfedbaby.com/fine-motor-activities-that-are-cheap/.

Also you can put objects in an ice cube tray, the spaces are small so your LO has to use 2 fingers to get them out. Also cut holes in socks for his thumbs and pointers and put them on his hands.

  • Dog hair on the floor worked for us!

I would not recommend this, but it's just funny how it worked. DD was playing on the floor, and all of a sudden would be really focused on a spot on the floor. Upon further inspection, she had seen a dark dog hair on the light carpet, and grasped for it. She figured out pincer grip this way. Yes, I did get the hair before she put it in her mouth. :)

  • I started getting the HappyMunchies puffs b/c they are a little bit bigger than the first Cheerio-sized puffs I tried. I fed him one just to make sure he figured out it was something yummy. Then I put two on his tray and backed away so he knew I wasn't going to feed it to him. It worked like a charm, and now he can pick up the smaller puffs, too. I will say though that I don't believe he's really got a pincer grasp going on. He definitely palms most everything he picks up, then squishes his palm against his mouth. There is finger action involved, but it's not a truly defined pincer grasp.

  • My son is the same. Everything goes straight to the mouth, except the puff pieces I've given him the last weekish. I figure it's practice right now, not nutrition so as long as he is enjoying learning to eat by playing with them then it's okay.

ETA: OP, your siggy pic kills me. Your baby is too cute!

  • Lead by example. DS wants anything we are eating, all we did was eat a few while he was watching, and it clicked within minutes and he's been eating them ever since.
