OBGYN rec?

I live in Wicker Park and my primary is at Advocate Illinois Masonic.  I am about 8 weeks preg and would like to schedule a first meeting asap.

I've heard some sketchy things about Advocate's birthing center, even though the nurse said her gyno is awesome.  Anybody know anything about Dr. Silvia Bicalho at Advocate?

Another rec I've had was Dr. Brian Foley, who is with Northwestern and delivers at Prentice.

I'd really like to hear from anyone who has experience with either doctor, or either hospital.

I would also take other recommendations if you know someone great in the city.

Thanks!

Re: OBGYN rec?

  • I delivered at Prentice and had a great experience. I think there is a post from a few weeks ago with general Prentice reviews.

I don't have experience with either of the doctors you mentioned but I love the Women's Group of Northwestern www.womenobgyn.net. My doctor there is Dr. Leavitt. Dr. Murthy delivered my daugther. They are both fantastic.

I believe there was another poster from this board who wasn't crazy about the Women's Group. Of course, you'll find different opinions about every doctor and hospital. Hopefully this will help you find the right fit for you.

  • My really good friend is due next month and is with the doc group at NMH that Dr. Foley is in.  She said she didn't love him but had heard great things and decided to go with a midwife in his practice.  She LOVES the midwife.  NMH/Prentice has really high c-section rates.  People say that's up to you and your doctor, but I know from speaking with non-clinical people that work at Prentice that they don't have enough beds there for the number of women who deliver, so they try to move people through as quickly as possible, which means higher incidence of c-section.

For what it's worth, I'm planning to deliver at Good Sam in Downers Grove because I grew up out there and my doctor, who has been my doctor forever and who I really trust, is out there and it's about 40 minutes from our place.  In traffic, it would take us over an hour to get to NMH or Rush or anywhere else "downtown".

I don't really know anything about Illinois Masonic or Advocate, sorry!

  • Thanks Ladies!  I'll scroll down for the other post. :)
  • I have delivered at Prentice twice and was very happy with both experiences. Delivered naturally with my daughter the first time around and had a c-section with my twins this past summer. Labor and delivery nurses were amazing.

I go to the NMFF OBGYN practice and see Dr. Dana Gossett. Cannot say enough good things about her! She is fantastic and caring and responsive.

    Good luck!

  • I've been going to the Northwestern Specialists for Women group and have been seeing Dr. Dugan.  It's an all women's group.  I've been very impressed with the knowledge of the doctors and the quality of care I have been receiving.  I will be delivering at Northwestern.

I, also, go to Northwestern Specialists for Women.  I met all of the Drs in the practice when I was on hospital bedrest with my twins, and they are all great.  My primary is Dr Cox and Dr Dugan delivered my twins. Every Dr there was supportive of me delivering my twins vaginally, and they were all comfortable with doing a breech extraction of Baby B had I needed it. I gained a lot of respect for the practice and all of the Drs there because of that.  A lot of OB's immediately default to c-section with twins.

  • Dr. Foley delivered my daughter. I cannot say enough good things about him or the practice. I will say there is one doctor there (Dr. Starr) that I really didn't like, she had terrible bedside manner. I did end up with a c/s but it was necessary and an emergency situation. My scare is tiny and recovery was very easy. I really credit that to Dr. Foley.

I just, unfortunately, spent 2 weeks at Illinois Masonic after developing an early onset of Pre-E. My OBGYN (Dr. Harety) is in the same group as Dr. Bicalho and they were all fantastic.  Because I was in the hospital for so long, I got to meet all of them and I can't say enough about them.  Also, the nurses at IL Masonic were wonderful!  The hospital isn't nearly as impressive as Prentice, but the care I received was second to none IMHO.  Also, I pray you don't have anything to do w/ the NICU...but my daughter was born at almost 28 weeks so its our new home...and its also amazing.  There is constant access to a doctor and the nurses are fantastic. Hope this help...GL with the remainder of your pregnancy.
