I flew home to LA with my 8 month old without my husband last September and you'd be surprised how helpful people at the airport are! I made sure to get a window seat and brought plenty of toys that weren't too noisy. I also brought a pacifier (he never used one before) just in case his ears bothered him on take off and landing. hmm...what else...oh those little puffs that dissolve if your LO is eating solids and I nursed him every chance I could. Wasn't too bad. I didn't bring a stroller, I brought my Ergo carrier and that worked out well.
Hope this helps. Safe travels!

I've heard feeding them during take off and landing (either BF or bottle) that way for the pressure changes, they are moving their jaws, and it should help with the ear popping.
