GD- Numbers getting higher?

Well, it seems my numbers are creeping up the past 4 days. My fasting, which was in the 70s, is now 92-94. And, I'm struggling with my after dinner numbers even though I've been eating the same foods. I'm 30 weeks tomorrow.

Can anyone give me guidance on what the criteria is for requiring meds?  Is there a point where they decide diet and exercise can no longer cut it?  I am new to this and meet with the MFM on Tuesday and am trying to prepare myself. Also, does anybody test 1 hour after eating?  If so, what is the goal for a 1 hour meter reading?

Thanks!

Numbers in the 70s for fasting are *incredibly* good and not what you will normally find with GD. Generally, if you have blips above your cutoffs (for most of us, above 90-95 fasting or 120-130 after 1 hour), it isn't normally a big deal. If you are getting those readings for days in a row, for more than a week or two, then it is probably time to discuss meds.

If you haven't already, I would definitely start walking after meals. I found that it helped quite a bit to keep my numbers down when they started to creep up. Also, you might consider taking Inositol. It has been shown to help prevent GD and reduce blood glucose in women with GD. Anecdotally, it dropped my fasting numbers a good 10-15 points, and I have seen similar results with other GD and PCOS women on other message boards.

Wow!  Thank you so much!  That's very helpful!  My RE had me on inositol during ivf for some reason. Not sure why. It was just one in a cocktail of many supplements. And, I still have some left over. I'll give it a whirl!

So, the 1 hour reading should be below 120?  That's tough for me lately. I'm barely getting below 120 at two hours.  I'm finding I'm closer to 140 lately after dinner.  Earlier in the day my numbers are 110-115 after two hours. Hmmm...

    thanks again!

My Dr. told me anything below 95 fasting and 120 after 2 hours of eating.

So far mine are in the mid 80s fasting and 100-110 after lunch and dinner.   My levels after breakfast are usually just a few points higher than fasting or even lower.

Those are my times and ranges as well. But, I'm curious what the target number would be testing 1 hour post meal.

I was doing great for ten days. My fasting numbers were 70s and 2 hours post meal I was regularly in the 80s, sometimes 90s. Now, I'm easily 110+ (some 140s+) two hours post. Amazing the difference a few weeks makes. Ugh. Maybe it's stress?  I've not been feeling amazing (have had GI upset) and since Friday have been going non-stop for a bunch of reasons. I feel like I need a "quiet" day and maybe that will help if I actually get one.

Your blood sugar will probably get harder to control the farther along you get. That, combined with trial and error to find what works for you, may be what's giving you higher numbers.

Criteria for meds will vary a little from dr to dr, but in general they are looking for a pattern of high numbers, not just one here and there. I was on insulin within a week of my first diagnosis because about 90% of my numbers were high.

Cutoffs also vary from dr to dr. With my first, I was to be under 90 for fasting and under 140 at 1hr post meals. With my second, I was to be under 90 for fasting but under 120 at 1hr post meals. New research is suggesting tighter control at 1 hour has a better outcome for mom and baby.

This is correct. I gave you a range of 90-95 fasting and 120-130 after 1 hour because that is the range that most doctors are using. Blood sugar peaks 1 hour after, so I don't know why some practices are still using 2 hour numbers. But, yes. best practice is to be under 90 and under 120.

During my last pregnancy, I started to get some readings in the 140s in my 3rd tri, and walking after meals solved that problem. Fasting numbers are harder to control with diet and exercise, which is why I recommended Inositol. I have seen doses up to 4,000 mg. per day. I am currently taking 750 mg. twice per day and it is working to keep my numbers good (my fastings were starting to get into the 90s a few times per week and it solved that problem).

The inositol helps you to be less insulin resistant, and many REs are starting to recommend it for women with PCOS in lieu of metformin, or to reduce the dosage of met. REs tend to be at the forefront of research on these issues vs. your general OB, which is why you likely first heard about it from your RE. As you can see, the research is positive, but still fairly new. I am surprised that I don't see more women on this board (with GD) using it before they go to Metformin or (especially) Glyburide (which can put weight on you).

Thank you, everybody!  I moved my nighttime snack even later last night (apple with almond butter) and got an 88 fasting this morning and no night sweats last night. I always find that my fasting is high if I have had a bad night sweat. I don't know if they are related or how, but that's what I find. It's just a pattern I'm seeing. Who knows?

Going to try to add more walking later in the day. I exercise in the morning and then just keep busy throughout the rest of the day. After dinner is especially busy with clean up, homework finishing and bedtime routines for my 8 and 10 year olds. But, I'll figure that out.  Can't be too hard to squeeze in 15 minutes of something.

Thanks!  Going to get the ok from my doctor today to try the inisotol...

Honestly, I don't know what I would do without this helpful group of experienced women. My doctor would be so annoyed by me constantly calling with questions. :-)

I had post-2 hour numbers in the 90-120 range and fasting in the 110+ so they put me on glyburide to take at night. Yesterday (without the pill) I was 120 in the morning. Today, with the pill, it was 78. If you can't change your diet (such as the night fasting) they will put you on meds.
