TTC after 35

Laproscopy?

My RE wants to do a laproscopy to check for endometriosis while he is removing my uterine polyps or scar tissue with a hysteroscopy.  I gather that he wants to just kill two birds with one stone.  The only symptoms I have are abnormal spotting (which could be caused by polyps) and an inability to get pregnant within one year (which also may be caused by polyps).  He wants to rule out as much as possible and remove obstacles.  But, a laproscopy seems like a very invasive surgery and I'm not sure it's really necessary.  I'm not sure if I should ttc after the hysteroscopy and resort to the laproscopy only if we can't conceive after the hysteroscopy or if I should follow my doctor's advice.  What do you think?

Re: Laproscopy?

  • If yo have scarring on your fallopian tubes or adhesions the lap will see that and they can take care of it, does he plan on doing both surgeries at the same time? If so i would say yes, that way you only have to recouperate once!

My lap is schedule for 3/15. I have never had the other, but my uterus looks good on the inside, but due to PID in college, mt Dr is worried there may be scarring - which is preventing me from having a BFP at all since ttc. Good luck!

  • Hi there,

I had a hysteroscopy last month - during Pre-Op my doctor said that during the hysteroscopy - if he found anything suspicious which would require a lap, he would do it at that time. I had to authorize that.  Laps are more invasive but both are pretty big deals with anesthesia, doing it in a hospital, etc.   I'm guessing it's much better for the patient to do it all at once.

I feel like more women (on this board) post about laps vs hysteroscopies and most do so on the TTTC or Infertility boards so you may find some great answers there.  I'm not familiar with laps or why you would definitely do it.  I wonder if like me, he/she could go in for a hysteroscopy and do a lap if needed?

Me: 37 DH: 37 TTC since Jan 2012. RE consult and initial testing done in Aug 2012: SA fine, AMH 1.1 & HSG clear - on way to IUI but got BFP on 9/10/2012. m/c 10/3/2012 at 6w5d. BFP next cycle which was a c/p. IUI #1: Clomid 100mg 12/6= BFN. IUI#2 (unmedicated) Jan 2013 = BFN. Hysteroscopy 1/25/13. IUI#3 Clomid 100mg 2/23 = BFN IUI# 4: BFN. IVF #1 April 2013, BFP!  EDD 1/12/14 with Boy!

  • I just had an update, talking to my RE office regarding Insurance concerns and fees and I asked for the procedure codes, turns out I am having both Lap and hysteroscopy.

The only way to see the condition of your organs on the outside is through the Lap, which if there are any adhesions, scarring, cysts etc they can be dealt with then.

So my suggestions is if your doing one, and the DR feels the 2nd is needed do both, only one surgery instead of coming back again.

  • Heather Lenox: Thanks for your responses. I will schedule the hysteroscopy tomorrow after the sonohysterogram. I'm still thinking about the lap. It makes me nervous. What does TTTC mean?
