We switched around 7 months, which was earlier than we expected but we did so because DS got a Doc Band helmet and we wanted him to have more headroom in his seat and for there to be more space for air to circulate so he didn't get hot. I think with DS's size, if he hadn't gotten the helmet, we probably had 1-2 more months before we would have to switch anyway.
DS is 11 months and 22 lbs and we're just starting to think about buying a regular car seat for him. I've been researching and asking around to see what my friends like the best.
We will be switching on Thursday! (when our new seat arrives) She out grew the height, and it's just generally getting harder to put her into it. We stopped taking it out of the car a looonnnggg time ago though.
We got our seats around 5 months, but didn't put LO in them until 7 months. We have Graco seats and they're great! We had to switch bc our LO was just way too heavy to lug around that car seat. It forced him to learn to sit-up on his own and to sit at the table with us so all in all we're pleased!!
I'm waiting for our convertible seat to arrive. DS is almost at the 30" max for his infant seat and he's so freaking heavy in it, I'm looking forward to making the switch.
We moved DD at 9 months she was 29 inches and 20 lbs. She would push against the seat and pitch a fit. We bought the Graco Nautilus 3 in 1. Love it!
This is a FF only seat and is NOT appropriate for a 9 month old. Not that I'd even recommend it at 1, but Graco has a 1 year MINIMUM for the seat, so you absolutely cannot use it.
OP- we switched DS to a convertible when he was about 6m old.
We just ordered a Diono radian r100 from Amazon. Now just patiently waiting on its arrival to the house. Then we'll be switching over. DS will be 10 months in a few days.
Just switched last weekend but still rear facing. He seems to enjoy the car a little more.
All of us should still be rear-facing...it's the law until 1 in most states, and is a good idea as long as the child has not outgrown the RF limits of the seat -- the AAP now recommends RF until at least 2 (bent knees is better than a broken neck).
The law can't force you to buy a new vehicle. My son is 31" long and I held out on the infant car seat as long as we could but just switched to the Graco Convertible two days ago. It won't fit RF in my truck. He's safer forward facing in a full size truck than he is rear facing in any car anyway. There are 1 year olds in the 90th percentile for height and weight and there are 1 year olds that are in the 10th percentile for height and weight. Who decides one year old is the safe number? I like the recommendation for two years old but for us there's no way. The only way I was able to get it RF was behind the passenger side, which is the most dangerous spot in any vehicle, with the seat all the way up and the back rest tilted forward so that I couldn't see out that window. That's safe.

This is absolutely NOT true. Rear facing in any position in the car is safer than forward facing. The group Car Seats for the Littles on FB is a great resource to ask to find a seat that will work with your car.

I agree with this. Your child is 5 times safer rear facing rather than forward facing and again, the law is that they have to be at least 1 year old minimum but really at least 2. Ask the FB group sunny recommended; they can help you figure out an option where you won't have to break the law or put your baby at risk. Also re the age minimum, It's not about their height and weight; it's about their body's development and ability to withstand the impact.

This is the biggest load of bullsh!t I have ever been served. Your child IS NOT SAFER FORWARD FACING AT 10 MONTHS! The AAP suggests keeping your child rear facing until at least 2 it doesn't matter if their legs are bent against the back of the seat.
For crying out loud I am SMH at every single one of you ladies that FF face your babies!
I bought it at Christmas and had no idea it wouldn't fit RF. I wish I was as good of a mom as you and had the money you must have to go buy another.
oh stop it with the "woe is me" bull. You could have returned the carseat after you realized it wouldn't fit rear facing. Also most places (like babies r us) will let you take the floor model out to your car to see if it fits before you purchase the seat.
You can absolutely find an affordable convertable car seat.
I don't have a lot of money but I do my research and I would never compromise my child's safety because I messed up and bought the wrong seat. Return it, sell it whatever and get something that fits.
I bought it at Christmas and had no idea it wouldn't fit RF. I wish I was as good of a mom as you and had the money you must have to go buy another.
A Cosco Scenera costs $50. Surely you place a higher value than $50 on your child's life. Also, many health departments will give out seats for free if you truly do not have the money to buy an appropriate seat for your child.
Another voice for RF as long as possible! It is absolutely safest, no matter what kind of vehicle you have or how large your child is.
OP: we switched to a Britax Roundabout 50 convertible at 9 months, and RF until he was around 2.5.
For those that have smaller cars, this has been a great seat both RF and FF for us. I own a Mazda6 with a medium amount of legroom, and it was definitely less cramped with the Britax RF than when the infant seat was in.

No one is implying you are a bad parent, Dawn. Carseat education is something that a lot of us feel passionately about, as we've seen what can happen when your child isn't safe. God forbid, no one wants to think about worst case scenarios, but we are simply trying to educate you guys on carseat safety, as the reccomendations have changed in the last year and not all pedi's are encouraging the new recs.
I would try listing the seat on Craigslist or looking for a consignment sale to recoup your money.

Actually I AM implying that all parents who forward face their child before the age of 1 ARE bad parents.

H2theL They must not be bringing their child to well visits because I am pretty sure that no pediatrician would ever suggest FF a child under the age of 1.
oh and forget about reading the instructions on the car seat LMAO! I am assuming it says right in there not to forward face a child under the age of 1 so I highly doubt these women are uninformed.
I bought it at Christmas and had no idea it wouldn't fit RF. I wish I was as good of a mom as you and had the money you must have to go buy another.
You have got to be kidding me. You really think that an 8 month old is safe FF??? As pp's have mentioned you can get a Cosco Scenera for $50. My 3.5 year old is 38 inches tall and still RF in a Cosco in grandma's car. Sell your FF car seat. Also please don't play the "woe is me" card, if you want me to say you're not a good mother for not researching what car seat fits in your vehicle and then breaking the law and all safety recommendations for infants by turning your BABY around then I can do that. It has nothing to do with your financial situation.
You do understand also that it's a function of the bones getting stronger and harder that determines when a child is safest FF, not how big they are right? A 25 lb 2 year old is safer FF than a 30 lb one year old because their bones are stronger.
OP: We switched DS to a Britax Boulevard at 11 months. He loved being up higher to see out the windows and it has been a fabulous seat for us. We unfortunately had a bad car accident with DS in the car when he was 26 months and thankfully he was perfectly fine. We replaced that Boulevard with a new one we love them so much.

I just have to say that my son is 9 months, 27lbs, and almost 32 inches. I am 6'1 and my hubby is 7'3. We did A LOT of research for a car seat that would fit him rear facing for as long as possible and still give us giants enough leg room in our sedan.
Length is absolutely not an excuse for putting a child front facing before he is of age and development. We will be going RF for as long as possible even if it means he'll be eating his knees for a few months.
Oh, and our car seat wasn't super expensive either. Maybe $100 with tax. They exist, put your time in to research what is best for your child.

This is incredible inaccurate and dangerous. Height and weight have no bearing on the fragile neck of a 10month old child. Educate yourself and stop making excuses. You screwed up by FF your kid this young so fix it and protect him.
This carseat costs $39. It's smaller and you should have no trouble getting it fit. It works RF for kids up to 35lbs. If you can afford a Graco you can surely come up with less than forty bucks to keep your kid safe. Enough with excuses.

Exactly. The law can't make you buy a new vehicle if yours doesn't pass inspection either but they can tell you that yours isn't allowed to be driven on the road. If you want to/need to keep your truck, OP, you either have prioritize getting a seat you can afford that fits or not use that truck to take your kid anywhere.
