Crib transition

Benjamin is in our room at night. He outgrew the bassinet and is in the PNP bassinet part. Anyways, I'm leaning toward him sleeping in his own room for a few reasons. First, we sleep with our two yorkies and sometimes they wake him up. Also, sexy time would be a lot nicer if he wasn't right there. Our bed is pretty squeaky. Haha. Plus I keep reading that despite what you'd think, baby and parents both sleep better once LO is in their own room.
So what is everyone's experience with this? He won't nap in there at all and I'm afraid he just won't like it and it'll be hell for us.
And, I read somewhere that to reduce SIDS you should keep them with you for 6 months minimum?? Anyways, all experiences welcome and appreciated!

Re: Crib transition

  • Just go for it. Put him in his crib... he might surprise you! It sounds like it is time.

R has been in her crib since the first night, and we slept on the day bed in her nursery for 4 weeks or so... but then we transitioned out of her room. I love it. We all sleep better.

    6 months? Wow, I hadn't heard that.

LJ has slept in his room/ crib since we brought him home. We figured since he slept in his own "crib" at the NICU  there was no sense in making him sleep with us once we got home.

I've never heard the SIDS prevention technique of sleeping in parents room, I'm not sure exactly how that works. I do know that having LJ in his crib is like a peace of mind in the sense that we know he is safe and ok.

We started with just an audio baby monitor. But LJ used to grunt alot in his sleep and I found myself going in to check on him--only to find him dreaming or simply making baby noises. Once he rolled over for the 1st time, we got a video baby monitor because he was still swaddled. NOw I find it is helpful to set it to the noise activation mode since he is transitioning out of the swaddle.

Sometimes I wonder if these 'sleep transitions' are for the baby or more in regards to us the parents!

Q: Why won't baby nap in his room? Does he spend time in there? LJ will sometimes take naps during the day in his crib. Also we change him in there alot. He also has a white noise machine that has a projector. Perhaps he needs to spend more time in there so he realizes its a safe place?

  • H almost never napped in his crib before we made the transition. We moved him at 9 weeks. The first two nights he was a little more wakeful, then it was fine...as with everything, it was a much bigger deal to me than it was to him. Good luck!

  • G wouldn't nap in her crib either. But we would put her in there for a bit while she was awake so she would get use to being in there. The first couple nights were tough for me but she slept fine. I still watch the video monitor like a hawk!

We spend lots of time in there. Tummy time, all diaper changes, looking in the mirror, and I put him in his crib to hang out too. Sometimes I talk to him while he's in there and sometimes he just hangs out and talks to himself. But when it comes to napping in there he just won't last more than 10 minutes. Today we hung some colorful Pom poms from the ceiling over his crib. He watched me make them for over an hour so I know he loves them. I'm hoping that makes it easier.

  • I'm Canadian and actually had a nurse come check out DS sleeping arrangement o make sure our intentions were to keep him in our room for six months and that there was only a crib sheet in his crib. He slept in a bassinet for 2.5 months and started to out grow it. Not every baby transitions as easily as pps said. It took our son two weeks and he still doesn't sleep like he used to. I hope your time is easier than mine!
  • I think we moved to the crib at 12 weeks. We have a small blanket rolled up and placed under one end of the mattress to elevate it at a slight angle. I also have some blankets rolled up and placed under the sheet in a U shape. R fits in the U with the bottom of it right under his knees.

It helps him feel snuggled in like he did in his RnP, and I feel like he is safe in there. He sleeps very well in his crib now. I thought it would take a while to transition, but he took to it immediately. We all sleep much better now.
