Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those with 9 month olds

Hi all! How many ounces is your 9 month old getting per day? I called the doctor and they said 12-18 ounces. That seems so little.

Re: Those with 9 month olds

  • DS and DD are now 10 months old, but at the 9 month check up I was told they should be getting a minimum of 18oz per day.

  • I think this is very child dependent honestly. Also depends on formula or BM. I have a peanut sized daughter. DD just had her 9 month visit and was only 14.7lbs.... Anyway, on a typical weekeday she nurses 3 times and takes 8-10oz of breastmilk. I'm guessing she takes in about 4oz a nursing session so she gets around 20-22oz a day. She loves solids and up until this week she has been having two good sized meals. She really packs it away for such a small baby :) We just added in a solids lunch meal after talking with her doctor and I suspect after a few weeks this will cause her milk intake to drop down to around 18oz a day.
  • DS gets 20-24 oz, our pedi said he should be getting only 18 oz.  But he was so hungry when we tried to cut back.

  • Child and DAY dependent. Saturday she nursed 4, maybe 5 times and ate tons of solids. Sunday she nursed 8 times and needed 3 oz of formula and ate maybe a bowl of oatmeal and some avocado. Yesterday 16 oz of BM/formula, plus I nursed her 4 times in the evening and she just ate some yogurt. Today, she already ate 3 times with me this morning before work (4am, 7 am and one last 9 am feed), after her morning nap, DH said she had oatmeal and eggs with Daddy.

So, who knows? I just count the diapers- if she has at least 5 wets, that look clear and an average of at least 1 poop a day, I assuming the intake is going fine. If her wets start to look too yellow or drop in number, I add in a feed. If she hasn't pooped in 5 days, I break out the prunes and up the intake.

At this age though, she eats when she's hungry. She has even started snubbing the breast or bottle if she's not hungry!

  • 24-26oz a day plus 3 meals a day.  The solids are as much as he'll eat.  Lately not much which I think is due to teething.

  • Our LO is eating 30 oz a day. Our ped said he shoudl be getting 4 bottles a day at 9 months
  • Our son gets about 30 oz a day, he also gets veggies mid morning and a serving of veggies at night. He also picks off of our plates at dinner

  • Our pedi told us we could feed LO 3 meals a day. At our 9 month check up he gave us an information sheet about meals and formula. It said he could have anywhere from 16-25oz. LO eats between 20-25oz. a day. But he is a few days short of 10 months.

  • Our pedi said breast milk or formula should be the primary source of nutrition for the whole first year; solids are just for practice at that age (though of course you're in transition mode as you get closer to 1 but they still need that nutrition from that amount of formula). At 9m my boys were drinking 24-28 oz/day plus 3 meals of solids per day. She didn't want us to go below 21-24 oz/day.

  • My daughter is 10 months and she has anywhere from 18-20oz per day she nurses at night as well.

  • Nate takes 30-34oz and the pedi seemed to think that was good. Their practice also believes in mostly formula or BM for the first year (they actually recommend no more than 2 solid meals a day before 9 months) and slowly increase the solids to 3 meals and 1-2 snacks a day between 9-14 months as you wean off bottles. This works for us because Nate only eats a tiny bit at meals and is still taking 4-6 oz every two hours during the day.
