Car Seat Recommendations

Hi Everyone,

My family and I are taking a trip in 3 weeks and will be renting a car.  I do not want to rent a car seat from the car rental company, but I also don't want to have my expensive car seats go through baggage.  I have 2 kids under the age of 3 and carrying them through the airport to gate check doesn't seem very feasible either.

I would like to just buy 2 car seats that if something happens to them, it's not that big of a deal.  If I go this route, I would just check them with our baggage on the plane.  I would need one convertible and one high back with harness.  Preferably something that is easy to install and on the cheaper end.

Any recommendations?

Re: Car Seat Recommendations

  • The Evenflo Maestro would work for your older child. It's $80 - harness to booster. How big is your little one? I hear the Cosco Scenera recommended a lot for a cheap second seat. It's about $40. Rear faces to 35 lbs and 36" and forward faces to 40 lbs and 43" (depending on the model).

  • My oldest is 29 lbs and 38" and my youngest is 19 lbs and 30".

Both of those seats would be perfect then. You could possibly get away with the Scenera for both kids, although your oldest is close to the height limit if he has a long torso. (DD2 is 38" and is pretty much at the height limit of that seat.)

  • Ditto angela on the maestro and scenera. Also, the *only* safe way to check a carseat is if it's in its original box. Otherwise it counts as crashed and can't be safely used, so if you're buying seats with the express purpose of checking them make absolutely sure they're checked in their original boxes or they aren't safe to use at your destination or after this trip.

  • We have the Cosco Scenera as our travel seat and it's great because it's so light!

Also CPST recommend that you don't check the seat with your baggage because then it could be considered "crashed" so that is something to thing about.

  • Take the car seats on the plane and install them in their seats. Don't gate check your seats. Youtube has some scary videos that people have taken with handlers tossing their seats like cabers.

It's also FAA recommended to put kids in car seats. I won't link, but I highly recommend doing so.
