Need recommendations for puzzle loving 20 month old

I'm looking for toy/puzzle suggestions for my 20mo old son. He loves doing puzzles and figuring out how things work. We started with the large wooden knob puzzles, then progressed to the chunky Melissa & Doug style ones without handles. He learns to do them very quickly, even new ones (by looking at the picture and matching it with the pieces). I'd love to encourage his love for puzzles, but I can't really find a good "next step" product. I'm wondering if someone else with a puzzle-loving child can help me.

I got a 12 piece M&D puzzle (jigsaw, but sturdy wood), but it doesn't have the picture underneath. He has nothing to match and seems completely confused at how to put the notch in the hole.

We're currently working on a M&D alphabet one (with the little plastic knobs) that has photos under the word, so the "M" has a moon and so on. He doesn't get that concept yet, but at least the puzzle part is challenging for him.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

  • By that age, DS1 was playing with puzzles on our tablet.  There are a bunch of easy number/letter/animal ones out there and he loves them.  We also found a ton of the old wooden Playskool ones at garage sales.
