Breast milk bags

I've been EP this whole time and storing milk in bags in the freezer. When I defrost them, sometimes the bags leak. I've tried lansinoh and BRU brand. I thought  lansinoh was suppose to be the strongest. I fill my sink with hot water to defrost them. When they leak, I throw them out since it's not sterilized anymore. Such a waste! I hate it. Don't want to waste any liquid gold. Any suggestions for better bags?

Re: Breast milk bags

  • I have defrosted soooo many bags of bm, mostly when taking care of other's babies.... and I never just left them in the sink. Running the bag under warm water melts the milk in no time.

Okay, other epers, correct me if I am wrong... I don't think the bags are leaking, just that the milk is seeping out of the zippy part into the water due to changes in temp/pressure... so don't let the zippy part go under water..

  • Make sure to get all the air bubbles out when freezing. That part pops fairly easily if it hit just right when frozen.

Put the frozen bag in a ziplock when thawing that way if it leaks you won't use the milk.

Lasinoh is very generous about this problem. I've known a few people this happened to and when they called lasinoh then sent them a free box of bags.

  • Ditto to PP about the zippy part. I've put them in a cup of hot water so the zippy seal doesn't go under. Only twice have I had an actual leak in the bag and it was because it froze funky instead of flat.

  • I've been using the lansinoh bags and haven't experienced any leakage.  Maybe double check if they are fully sealed before freezing and sit it in a cup to defrost instead of the sink.

  • I also use Lansinoh bags.

I wouldn't leave them in the sink. Leave them in a bowl/cup of hot water. It really doesn't take long to thaw at all. You can also just put the bag in the refrigerator the night before since you know you're going to have to use some. It shouldn't take too long of it thawing out to realize if there's a hole. So if you are going to leave it in the sink/bowl of water, just run it under some hot water first to see if anything starts leaking out. Seriously should only take a minute.

Anyway, as far as freezing. When you put a new bag in the freezer, don't lay it on one that's already frozen. It could make them stick together and could be causing slight tears when you take them apart. So lay the new one flat all by itself, once it's frozen you can stack with the others.

It could (like PPs) mentioned be the zippers.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the tips. I haven't thawed any of mine yet and seems I'm storing all sorts of wrong. Here's hoping the stash in there thaws ok.
