I use a food processor (Kitchen Aid) to make baby food. It works great. I've never used it for raw veggies/fruits (only cooked), but I'm sure it would work well. I have a very simple model with one pulse button. It does the job. HTH
We have a cuisinart and it works just great. I want a Vitamix, but not just for baby food. I really want one for so many things, but it is so expensive (especially compared to a cuisinart).
I have the Cuisinart handy prep (about $65.00 bucks) that I bought for baby food and it's wonderful. I never feel like I need to readjust the food at the bottom to get chopped up, like the way I do with my blender. I tried the baby bullet and it was HORRIBLE. Fell apart after around 6 uses.
If you want to spend the money a vitamix is amazing, I love mine and use it for a ton of things. As far as making baby purees, I'm not sure if it is that much better than anything else...but for margaritas that is a different story.

I have the Blendtec (comparable to the Vitamix, but IMHO better) and use it for baby food, smoothies, soups, etc. I used to have a Cuisinart and used that for my DD. It also worked great, but eventually broke. The Blendtec was it's replacement.
Vitamix..hands down. it can blend a rock. It is that powerful and I can get a nice smooth consistency for baby food. I also use it for my smoothies, pie filling, etc.
