(Long) Only read if you're bored. :(

Seems like a lot of us have been having a hard time this week. Good riddance February Gloom (or whatever Crash named it.)

Yesterday I was working (photographing a music class) and Lincoln was sitting by himself in a corner observing. Suddenly I hear him let out a blood curdling scream and I could tell it was a pain cry, not an annoyed cry.

I run to him and he tells me "Eye!" Another girl toddler had scratched right under his eye so I thought that is what he meant. I soothed him and after a couple of minutes he decided to play with the other kids.

Maybe a half hour later he walks over to me and I see his eyeball is bleeding. It totally took ten years off my life. I called the pedi ASAP and they told me to take him to the e.r. or to come straight away, but that I would have to see someone else because my pedi was busy. I didn't want to spend $500 so we went over there.

The pedi we saw kept getting his name wrong and was super flaky. I tried not to be judg-y since she IS a doctor but she kept vascillating, "Yes it is his cornea, no it's not" etc. She didn't get the dye in there well, there were just issues, etc. But she said Lincoln needed to see a specialist ASAP so they called Lincoln's regular specialist because they said they'd have more clout to get an emergency appointment.

In the meantime, I drive around aimlessly trying to kill time close to the specialist's office since I don't know when they would tell me to come in, and traffic in and out of my little town into the next can be a pain. Doctor's office calls and says the specialist works out of the office on Wednesdays but that her staff will explain the emergency and see what she says.

An hour goes by and my MIL has me convinced I am nuts for not asking to see a different specialist. So, I call back to the pedi and by now I am doing the full on "ugly cry" thinking my kid might go blind and they tell me they will try to get me in with a different specialist. It is 3 pm. Good luck, right?

The pedi's office calls back and says I need to go to the children's hospital ASAP so I drop everything (by now Lincoln has peed through his pants and we are in Old Navy looking for a replacement.) We make it there and the doctor is some big shot hospital honcho, which means he is super arrogant and kinda rude to the nurse. Oh well, he is very thorough. The cornea is NOT damaged! Also, the specialist confirmed what I suspected-that the other pedi we saw was not too bright. Someone please pour me a glass of wine. Oh wait, I can't have wine because of that stoopid liver test.

The other specialist (who we tried to see earlier) calls me at 6:15 at night and says she has been in the NICU all day, but that she will drive an hour to her office and see us AFTER 7 pm. How amazing is that? Thankfully we didn't need to see her since we got the all clear, but you just don't see that type of service anymore so I was thrilled with her.

So, now I am emotionally exhausted and super anxious about my own appointment tomorrow. I am hoping March will be off to a terrific start.

I would have lost my sh!t. I can't even imagine.

I am so glad you were able to see someone competent in the end (even if he was somewhat of an arrogant hot head) and that the damage seems to be minimal after all.

You totally deserve that glass of wine - hopefully you can have it tomorrow as a way to celebrate a clean scan (and whatever other tests they may run!)

OMG, that's so scary!!!  I'm so glad there wasn't any damage to the cornea.

Two thumbs up to the specialist who offered to come see you after hours, that's some dedication right there.

What a horrible experience - I'm so glad that there was no major damage, but I can't imagine dealing with all of that while your child is suffering, and you don't even know how much he is suffering.

I hope you don't have to see the flaky pedi again - if it were me, I probably would have a few snide remarks to make.

Also, my friend used to work for someone who taught med school classes, and my friend helped with grading, attendance, etc. After hearing how many of them put in the least amount of effort needed to get by, I never say, "But he/she is a doctor and knows better than I do." If they can't pay attention to you and what you are saying, then they probably couldn't pay very close attention to everything in med school Wink
