Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Late crawler?

My daughter is 9.5 months old and still isn't crawling.  The doctor says that babies do things in their own time and that I shouldn't be worried, but I cannot help it.  When we put her on her belly she will push up with her hands and sometimes move her feet a bit, but she never tries to do any more than that.  She loves to stand and some people have said that perhaps she will skip crawling all together, but I know it is an important milestone.  Do any of you ladies have any experience with late crawling?  Any suggestions?  Should I be concerned?

Thank you!

Re: Late crawler?

  • My babies are just over 9 months and neither of them crawl.  They push up and they have just started rocking, but no crawling yet.  I worried about it at first, but they're both pulling up and my daughter can take steps and cruise in addition to pulling up.  Crawling is an important milestone, but try not to get too hung up on what the books or the experts say.  Your doctor is right.  Babies do things on their own time.  GL!

Same here. Don't be worried. It seemed like she was trying for three to four weeks...it felt like forever but it eventually happened. Now she's figured she can go into other rooms and get into all sorts of things. :)

  • Mine's not crawling either and it bothered me.  He gets so mad when he can't get to something or do something but then won't try either.  However, we gave him a push toy and within 5 minutes he was pushing that thing across the living room.  I'm betting he'll walk before he crawls now.  Just enjoy what she can do now because she'll only be this little once.  (That's what I keep telling myself LOL)

  • DS is 11 months and still not crawling. My pedi said they don't worry until the baby hits 12 months and isn't crawling. He loves to stand behind his push cart and is starting to cruise a bit. I wouldn't be surprised if he skipped crawling. I'm trying to be very zen about it but I know it's hard to sit and wait.

  • My DS is 10.5 months and started crawling 1 week before he was 10 months. The first time he crawled he went from one end of the living room to the other, about 25 feet! We were cheering on the ground, hugging each other like he'd won a gold medal in the olympics.

    She'll get there!

  • I am in the same boat. DD is 10 months this weekend and at most will army crawl. She does love to stand and will pull up to her knees without assistance. I know it is hard not worry because I have friends with infants younger than mine who have been crawling for a month or more. Those same friend's children are not able to feed themselves the way my daughter does. I keep trying to tell myself that babies develop in their own way, maybe ours will skip the crawl and go to walking!!!
  • ....dont worry too much, actually crawling is not an important milestone because there is so much variation in mobility before walking. Doctors are concerned with being able to sit unsupported much more than if/when they crawl....
  •  same thing here  but ds  is about 2  weeks older.    he actually just stood from a sitting position  and took two wobbly steps today and has really only been able to Rock on his hands and knees and reach,  so don't worry,  the pedi  said 1  in 10  babies skip crawling first and go from sit to stand and walking.

she also said that heavy babies like mine often compensate with other skills like babbling or picking up food with two fingers instead of crawling  so maybe that will  be the case for your lo,  my ds  loves to babble  and pick up cheerios  :)

    This.

Crawling isn't actually considered a milestone anymore because so many babies skip it and go straight to walking.

I agree with this.  My pedi was concerned if he was sitting unsupported and grabbing for objects.  My LO scoots and rolls where he wants to.  My pedi said to focus on helping him stand at this point and pull up to a stand.

  • Thank you so much for all of the info, ladies!  I do feel much better now about her not crawling yet.  At this point I think she will probably be walking before she crawls!  Thanks again!
