January 2013 Moms

Would this make me a horrible mom?

So, LO hates her car seat and cries inconsolably about 75% of the time when we put her in it.  At the same time, I'm getting stir crazy in our house/neighborhood, and would like to drive out to some local parks for daily walks, go to see friends, etc. to occupy myself during the day (especially since it's 70F and gorgeous out right now). Am I horrible to put her into the car seat to go to a park or something, when I know it means she'll be in the car having a meltdown until we get to our destination and I can calm her down in the Ergo or whatever?  Or should I wait until she's more mature and can calm herself in the car seat better?  (LO is just one month old).

I'm trying to strike a balance.  I don't want to be overly paranoid/helicopter mom-ish but I also want to be compassionate and meet LO's needs.  Just not sure how to do this yet.

  • I'd put her in the carseat. I feel bad for Eloise, she also HATES her carseat, but we have to get things done. Getting some fresh air is good for everyone! Next week Eloise will be in the car over 7 hours while we're traveling in Florida... nothing I can really do but try and make it as comfortable as possible and try and tune out her crying.

  • My 2 y/o still hates being strapped in her carseat, so I say go to the park! She'll have to get used to it sooner or later, and a stir crazy mom isn't much fun :)

  • No.  I'm all for not letting babies cry, but unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do about this situation.  You can't avoid the car completely.  I wouldn't be joyriding around for the fun of it, but you have to be able to get places.  Obviously you'll be mindful of the situation.  Hopefully your LO will outgrow it soon!

  • Are the clothes you are putting on her too bulky? We had this problem and When we got rid of the hat and sweater she was way happier. Can you walk to any parks or around the neighborhood? I personally feel its a little young for crying it out unless the trip is essential. They just don't have the selfsoothing capabilities at this age.

P.S. I am soooo jealous of your weather.

Wow!! My mom tells a story of doing a long car trip with one hand on the wheel and a finger in my infant sisters mouth the whole time to prevent a meltdown! Hope it goes well, you never know!!

  • Thanks for the feedback!! I think I'll try a few short car trips to see how she does. If its a disaster, I'll limit how much we go out!!

  • DS hated his carseat too, ariund 1 minth old I started taking him out more and more sp he'd get used to it.  After a week or so he was great about it. He still doesnt like to sit still in traffic but he's notnscreaming bloody murder the whole time anymore.

I'd say start taking her out so she gets used to it and learns that she gets to go fun places in it.  A little crying isn't the end of the world.

  • Have you tried turning on music? When my guy is crying in the car we turn on the radio and it usually calms him. You have to turn the volume up so he can hear it over his crying.

  • Well I have a toddler who needs entertainment so baby cries in the car most days. I feed and burp before we go so I know she isn't hungry or in  pain, try to give her a paci, and hope for the best. DD1 HATED her carseat and I was a hermit for months when she was little. I was miserable and I regret it. I'm not doing that again. My sanity and DD1's life are important too. No adult has ever needed therapy because they hated their carseat as a newborn, KWIM?
