Rolling over and swaddling

A few days ago I posted for suggestions on how to wean the swaddle. Thank you to those who answered - I tried the cold turkey method and we've had three nights and three days of absolutely no sleep. LO and I are both EXHAUSTED physically and mentally, and I can't keep it up.

I'm a FTM. Am I being overly paranoid? Maybe he isn't ready to stop swaddling? The reason I stopped is because during playtime he's always turning on to his side and trying to flip over. I've never seen him do it sleeping, I just got worried he'd flip and get stuck with his arms pinned. I guess I assumed rolling over is the next step, but to all your experienced moms, how long from this activity did you LO actually flip? In the mean time I ordered a zipdeezip (a sleep sack basically with arms) to see if it helps.

The only way I'm getting him to nap now is to swaddle him loosely (I have the straight jacket kind, not a blanket so I'm not worried about him getting tangled in it if it comes undone) so when he falls asleep his arms are pinned, but it's loose enough he can pull them out if he needs to.

TIA

Re: Rolling over and swaddling

  • I think if he isn't fully rolling you can probably keep swaddling...at least that is what I'm doing. My DS gets up to his side, but that's it so far. I have started to do one arm out swaddle to slowly wean him off of it. Plus he almost always breaks out of his swaddle so I think he is close to be done anyway. Good luck and get some sleep!

  • It's pretty hard for youngin's to roll when they are all swaddled up tight, they use their legs and arms to do the rolling so typically it's still ok. Just keep checking to see if he does start rolling in his sleep, because eventually he'll get to that point, but usually when they can do that they can also get out of a swaddle. I stayed swaddling to 8 months with no problem, like I said just check on his progress every now and again, and if you see him starting to try and roll in his sleep, maybe start to loosen the swaddle and they eventually get rid of it altogether.

  • It really is safest to stop swaddling when your LO shows signs of rolling, even if he hasn't done it while sleeping yet.  You won't know ahead of time when he does it for the firt time, and it could be very dangerous if he rolls withoout the use of his arms to help lift his head.  We weaned gradually, doing one arm out, then both, then a Halo sleepsack.  That might be worth a try for your LO.  GL
