Still Swaddling at 5 months..

Carter is 5 months and hasn't been rolling yet, which is why we're still swaddling.

I've tried a few times, but 30min-1 hr into bed time, he's sleepily knocking the paci outta his mouth which resorts to being awake...

I know the 1 arm swaddle helps to wean, but he flails that one all over..I guess what I'm asking is - have any of you NOT weaned off the swaddle and how long will he learn the new "norm" of not being swaddled?

  • Do what works. DD wasn't able to ditch the swaddle until she was 11m. I'm a big fan of go at the kid's pace. Otherwise it will be a PITA for you. When DD have up the swaddle, it was painless for both her and us. A total non event, which is how I like it.

No kid has gone to college still needing to be swaddled.

DS never really needed to be swaddled. He slept fine without it, so I haven't swaddled him since we came home from the hospital. Each kid, really is, different.

  • We still swaddle at 5+ months with our DS. I've tried to ditch it a couple times and he even fights it here and there. Ultimately he just does better swaddled. With DD she was 7m before we ditched the swaddle and she was just ready so it wasn't a transition. I tried a couple times with her and at 7m it just worked. To me that meant she was ready. I plan to do the same with DS. I keep him in a sleep positioner so there isn't risk of rolling.

  • We're still swaddling as well. I tried once as well and it was an epic fail.

DS is 5 months today and I'm ok with swaddling. He rolls, but now in the swaddle so I'm ok with that.

He flails so much that he wakes himself up and scratches his face so I'm sticking to it.

  • DD2 is still swaddled for naps at daycare. It's working and she's not rolling to make it unsafe so I'm in no hurry to switch up what works.

It doesn't sound like your LO is ready to ditch the swaddle yet.  I'd keep trying every so often but don't stress if it takes a couple months to see some results. I feel like at every stage there's always a sleep "battle." At least with my LOs.

  • DS will be 6 months next Wed and am just trying the 1 arm swaddle today.  He's on his 2nd nap with it.  His first nap was a bit shorter than his usual and I did have to replace his paci once, but overall, I'd say it was a success.  He did scratch his face though.  I was in no rush to get rid of the swaddle, but he's been rolling (though he has never rolled while swaddled), so I thought I'd give it a shot and see what happens.

  • We haven't and I don't plan to for awhile. She was poorly swaddled for her morning nap and woke herself up every ten minutes for 40 minutes and then got up to eat. Screw that mess. I like sleep. With ds, we swaddled until about 10 months. The ped said we could put rolled receiving blankets tucked up against him to keep him from flipping over in his sleep. I still don't know why that is allowed and sleep positioners are the deavil, but it totally worked for us.
