Antiinflammatory diet

Does anyone have experience going gluten and dairy free to try to reduce inflammation ie autoimmune? If so, was it helpful?

Re: Antiinflammatory diet

  • I have Crohn's + bad eczema and went gluten free and it really, really helped.  I'm off most of my medications now.  I don't seem to have issues with milk so I kept that in my diet.

  • How long did it take to see results?

And do you follow the diet strictly?
  • I also have Crohn's but gluten free didn't help me at all. I am dairy free though. It took about a month for me to see real differences. Now though, if I have any milk product I know right away. Even if my food had been cooked in a lot of butter.

If you are really serious about it I would suggest an SCD (specific carbohydrate diet). It eliminates all gluten, grains, dairy and most sugar. It is reccomended for Crohn's, Colitis, and Celiacs. Amazon has a great cook book for it.

Don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. It takes about a month to 6 weeks for the "toxins" to get out of your system.

  • I completely agree with PP.  The SCD book is good, or just pick up a Paleo book.  I stumbled onto this because I decided to give "Paleo Diet for Athletes" a try.  If you follow it perfectly, it will take at least a month but like ehnasto said, up to 6 to really get the full effect.

I have to be fairly strict to have good results.  By fairly strict, I still eat at restaurants, using my best judgment about what does/doesn't have wheat ingredients (or use the gluten free menu if available) and I don't freak out about small amounts of cross contamination.  If there's a crouton in my salad, I just pick it out.

  • I have been gluten free for almost 4 years. Started at the suggestion of my naturopath for my Hashimoto's autoimmune hypothyroid disorder.

Within a month my cystic acne cleared up and within two months the amount of thyroid medication I had to take was cut in half. (I'd been on it for almost 15 years!) Since then, my thyroid antibodies (that show how much my body is attacking my thyroid) have falling from the hundreds to almost in the normal range (I'm at 80, normal is 60 or below).

Kind of a no-brainer for me. I miss bread, eating out is a pain, but there's no question my body functions better without gluten!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the cook book suggestions I am getting into this process slowly so I will look into them as I go. All of this is a little intimidating to me as I love my wheat! I have sjogrens, so it's not crohns but does involve inflammation.

Melo I went to a naturopath also, which is where I got these suggestions. Did you take any herbs as well?
  • No, no herbs, at least not specifically for my thyroid. I was on a few for kidney and liver support, but stopped taking them when I broke my ankle and had to have orthopedic surgery in September.

I think anything is worth a shot as long as you are feeling good and are under the care of your doctor/naturopath. Some of those herbs can cause the blood to thin (why I couldn't take them prior/during my surgery) so I'm not sure if there would be complications with pregnancy as well.

It's really hard at first to go gluten free, but after a few months, if you stick to it, you'll see it's not so bad and worth all the effort.
