Trying to Get Pregnant

S/O Puppies

We just brought our mini schnauzer, Charlie, home on the 17th. He's nine weeks old now. DH and I love him to bits, but potty training has been such a pain! I knew that it wouldn't be easy, but I'm exhausted! Seriously.

I guess that I'm looking for some encouragement from other dog owners. It gets better, right? ;)

  • It definitely gets better.  We brought ours home at 8 weeks and potty training was a nightmare!  I'm a teacher, so I was home all day with her during the summer.  At the beginning we would only hang out in the kitchen.  Even going outside every 30 minutes (which our vet recommended) we were still having accidents in the house.

My advice: anytime he wakes up, stops playing, or immediately after eating - them him outside!  Also, giving treats after his does their business outside can help too.  It does get better.  Even being really consistent with her, it took several months me to feel like she was 100% potty trained.

    Good luck!

  • OMG!  LOVE!!!  We are a schnauzer family over here!  I have actually never potty trained a dog.  We rescued both our pups and the came potty trained already (One of the many bonus of rescuing a slighly older dog.)

I think just frequent trips outside after playing, eating and drinking will get the little guy used to the idea of doing his business outside.

  • It gets better!! Are you taking him out during the night? I would let my dog out at around 2am until he was 11 weeks and then he was able to hold it during the night. Charlie is so cute!

We take him out just before we go to bed, which is around 11p. He actually has been pretty good about sleeping through the night. We don't take him out until we wake up, which is around 6a.

  • Omg he is presh!!

Housetraining is a total pain in the beginning but once they start getting it, it gets a lot better. You just have to stay as consistant as possible. We were lucky with our dog that we got from the humane society in that he turned out to be housebroken already, but I did housetrain my other dog and she picked it up pretty quickly.

  • Crate training is important. Also take him out every time he wakes, eats or drinks. An after vigorous play. Do not leave him unattended. If he can get away from you he will hide and do his business.

Yes, it does get better. You can do it. Just take him out repeatedly and one day it will just click for him. Our Goldie was about 3 months old before she really cut down on the accidents and started going to the door on her own.

Our dachshund took a lot longer than that. They're a stubborn little breed and she couldn't hold her bladder for as many hours in a crate so she was more of a challenge.

    Good luck!

  • It definitely gets better! But training a puppy is serious business, lol! My girl is 8 1/2 now & i still remember taking her outside every 2 or 3 hours. & holding her butt in the air screaming "HOLD IT, HOLD IT, HOLD IT!!!!" running through the house to get her outside. It just takes patience. You're going to be so proud the first time he asks you to take him outside.

    Also, he's super adorable!

    Are you crate training?

    Yes.

That was the best thing that we ever did. Our big guy will just go in his crate to get away and sleep. Both of our dogs will sit quietly in their crate.

BUT, when he retreats to his crate when we walk in the door he most likely tore up the garbage or cleared out the refrigerator.

  • Housetraining is hard, but it will get easier :)  Just stick with it!!  It's the bad behaviors they pick up later in life that are hard to break them of!!  LOL!  Our 4yo dog is addicted to eating toilet paper and standing in front of the pantry barking non-stop for us to open it and give her a treat, she either gets one or a spanking somedays :/  Dogs are worth all of the stress though :)

  • Adorable!!!

So here is my tip, and I'll just say I had a pitpull that this didn't work on, so it's not for everyone but my really stubborn pekingese mutt took to it right away. Tie a bell to a ribbon and hang it from the door. Every time you take him out to go to the bathroom ring the bells obnoxiously, then when he goes outside lots of yayyyyyy's and treats. Hopefully if it works, he'll start to ring the bell.

Like I said my dog and my moms dog took to this right away, but my pitbull would just look at me and pee on my carpet so.... not for every puppy.

     Good luck!!

  • I think we got really lucky with our pup because he was a dream to train. We got him when he was 8 weeks and we did all of the same things that others have said, going for pee breaks every 30 minutes or so, right after sleeping, eating, and playing, treats and praise for going outside. We also made sure he ate at the same times everyday so I could start to predict his schedule. When he had an accident I would tell him "no" then take him right outside, even if I knew he wouldn't do anything. I would also watch him ALL THE TIME and if he started to circle or start his "pee routine" I would clap my hands loudly as I walked or ran towards him and that would scare him a bit and he'd stop in his tracks then I'd quickly grab him and go outside.

By the second day he was going to the door when he needed to go and didn't have any accidents at all after 10 weeks. I'm pretty sure he is actually a robot dog.

I'd say stick to it. It definitely gets better! Good luck!
  • So cute! Our dog was potty trained and crate trained before we got her....
  • I have two schnauzers and ite does get better. Make sure that you taken them out 10 minutes after they eat and after they drink much. Are you kenneling him while you are gone?
    image
  • I have been told that they can only hold it for the same number of hours that they are old. So 2 months=2 hours.  Worked with us.

I'm a SAHW/Babysitter, which means that I'm able to be home with him all day. But yes, we do use a crate when we're away.

  • Make sure you have the crate partitioned off so the pup only has enough room to lay. We had friends who didn't do this, and their dog poops/pees in her crate all the time. We did do it with our dog and she has never had an accident in her crate.
  • I so feel your pain!!  We just brought home a Boston Terrier, Stella, on the 15th and she is also 9 weeks old.  She will not sleep through out the night yet!  Literally up every two hours and taking her out and she still has accidents in the crate but she is much better in the day time.  I will say though that I can already see soo many improvements in the almost 2 weeks we've had her so yes it does get better!

  • We were very lucky with our golden retriever. We got him when he was 8 weeks and took only 2 days to train him, but we do have a doggy door. The first night we had to take him out in the midle of the night, but after that he slept through the night. Durring the day, we would push him out through the doggy door every time we took him outside, which was every hour. In 2 days he would just go out on his own every time he had to go.
