Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Biting, hitting, scratching

I have the sweetest DD. She is always happy and smiling. She is the most easy going baby ever....UNTIL she BITES you. She hits and scratches when frustrated or when she is done nursing. Sometimes out of no where. I really don't think she means anything by it. However, the biting seems a bit more calculated. She bites HARD. I have a bite mark from two days ago on my arm. She'll bite when she's done nursing. She'll bite when she's hungry. She'll bite if you take something away from her. I tell her no and obviously react in a way that lets her know it hurts. She cries when I tell her no, but will then try to bite again. I'm at a loss. She has 8 teeth.

  • I've been trying to break my son of a biting habit as well. He mostly only bites when hungry though. I call him vampire baby cause he will often go right in for my neck. Unfortunately when I tell him no he thinks its hilarious. I have been told that you also have to put them down if they bite you while you are holding them. I'm just planning on continuing to scold him until I get the point across and praying its a stage he will outgrow.

  • This is my kid exactly. He's been super sassy lately!!
  • DS is the same, mostly when he is tired or when I am feeding him he scratches my neck.  My pedi said when he does it just sit him done, even if only for a few seconds.  The don't understand consequences at this point though so you can't really discipline just don't allow it.

  • sounds really familiar!! I say to DS when he is scratching and hitting and biting lol. Thats not nice, my friends who have  experience this told me just to keep reinforcing that. And if we are playing just stop, so DS knows its not okay. They really dont understand consequences at this point, but if the response is always consistent. They will at some point understand, its not okay.

  • sorry for the errors in my previous post, sleep deprived
  • There was a really good boardbook that I picked up at the library called "Teeth are not for biting".  Even though they do not understand all of the words, they do pick up on the pictures.  And they do respond if you are firm and say like in the book "Ouch, biting hurts".  And there was good advice at the end of the book.  The book  is more for a toddler, but your little one will soon be there so this is a good book to have and read to your little one.

I also want to get "Hands are not for Hitting" boardbook in the future.  My son had an issue with biting when he was 1 years old at daycare, but he is fine now.  He however now has an issue with hitting at daycare so we are working with this as well.
