December 2012 Moms

Reflux - ugh. Need to vent.

I feel like a horrible mother. After trying to get LO back to sleep after his 2:30 feeding, I gave up at 4am and put him in his swing, where he slept for 3 hours.

His reflux is killing us (if that's what this is). I've got his crib mattress elevated. We switched formula to Enfamil Gentlease. We keep him upright for 30 min after he eats. We started him on baby Zantac a week ago. We got a RnP to help him sleep on an incline.

He still consistently wakes up 30-40 minutes after he goes to sleep when he naps. Every. Stinking. Time. Nights are better, but it's getting really hard to put him down - probably because he's so overtired.

We just finished a 3 hour inconsolable cry-fest. If this isn't colic, I don't know what is. Ugh - when will this be over?

  • Ugh. I'm sorry. I don't have any actual advice other than to say that you're not a terrible mother, especially of the worse thing you've done is let him sleep in his swing. That's where DD usually naps during the day... I say of it helps, go for it.

  • You may want to look into a potential milk or soy allergy/intolerance. It can have very similar symptoms to the reflux and colic. Also look into switching to Nutramigen formula. Hope that helps!

We battled this with DS and co-sleeping was really the only thing that helped the sleep issue. Good luck!

  • If it is reflux we were told that it can take 2 weeks to see a difference with the Zantac. Hopefully the medicine will kick in and help.

  • Like a PP, I don't see how you are a terrible mother. You sound like a fantastic one to me ... you're giving your baby what is needed!

This.  We started baby Zantac after her 2 month appointment because I noticed her spitting up was making cry more and more, and she was arching her back, etc.  It took about 2-3 weeks for me to really see any kind of difference.  She still spits a lot, but most days it's considerably less than before.  And the only time it really makes her cry anymore is after 5pm (because she's due for her dose at 6pm, and I'm assuming it's wearing off a bit).

  • We took DS2 to the doc for reflux.  It was pretty bad.  He had projectile vomit, bad rash around his neck cause you couldn't keep it dry from all the vomit. Bibs were too big for him, wrapped him in receiving blankets, but he would wiggle out.  It was a nightmare.  He complained all the time.  The doctor had me start adding cereal to his bottle and we switched to Gerber soothe.  He is like a totally diff baby now.  ESPECIALLY since he has grown to a better weight.  He smiles now, coos a bit.

    Good luck!

Ladynikon my 12 wk DD also has reflux and is on Prilosec. Thinking about changing to Gerber Soothe. She's currently on Alimentum RTF thickened with rice cereal. About 1 tablespoon and 1 Tspn for her 5 oz bottle. How old is your LO? How much rice cereal do you add to Gwrber Soothe?
  • DD wakes up 30 min after going to sleep too, I read this is just part of their regular sleep cycle. At 30 min it switches from light to deep sleep and it can wake them. I noticed she usually has a wet diaper at that point too. We switched to Pampers Baby Dry at night and now she usually doesn't notice. During the day I hold her for naps until after that point so I can soothe her back to sleep. Then if I put her down she is more likely to stay asleep.

Oh also I sometimes put her down on her tummy to nap, in her crib or over the boppy, if I can stay in her room and supervise. It seems more comfy for her and helped her get a lot of gas out too. She will sometimes sleep for over an hour!
  • Do NOT feel bad about letting him sleep in the swing!  DS sleeps in his every night, it helps with his reflux.  We will transition him to his crib when his reflux is better controlled.
