This. He knew I'd freak out if I thought anything had happened, which is why he originally didn't tell me that our dog ran outside when he opened the door and want crazy sniffing the landing.

OMG, crazy. I'm glad they were scared away from your house. You should call the police and let them know what happened. It might help them if they need a timeline or something.
