Re: what would s12 do?

  • I'm on the parents' side. That is wrong on the school's part.

  • I'm torn--on one hand, I really get where the parents are coming from--but I also get where the school is coming from.  The transgender kid isn't the only kid in the school, you know?  Seeing a little boy using the girls' room could be disconcerting to a kid--who are all, after all, only six.  I'm curious what caused the change in policy--according to the article, she was using the girls' room and then the policy changed, which makes me wonder if other kids or their parents had issues with what was going on or something like that. I think the school needs to handle this better, but I sympathize with them.

I also admit that I'm a little skeptical of the kid coming up with the idea of getting transgender surgery on her own when she was four.

  • I'm with the parents.

My guess is that kids would feel less awkward about it than their parents. I don't think most six year olds would necessarily even notice that the girl is biologically male. Bathrooms have stalls, and six year olds are pretty much still in the "if you look like a girl, you are a girl" mentality developmentally. I sort of wonder if it was causing problems with students or whether their parents were upset about the idea of a biological male in the girls' room.

But, IMO, this mentality is the problem. She is NOT a little boy. She's a little girl. Skeptical or not, she knows who she is.

Fair enough--you'll notice that *I* used she when talking about her.  But I can understand why many parents aren't ready for a talk about that kind of distinction yet and are going to see it as a boy using the girls' room, right or wrong--and the school has to deal with both.  My point about the surgery comment wasn't about her or her identity, but about the article--it felt one-sided and I think there were pieces missing.  This was just one example of where I felt it fell a little flat.

  • I think the parents are right here. I'm curious why the school suddenly changed positions on this. And as for any other kids who would think it's strange a biological boy is in the girls' restroom, the kid looks like a girl, so I don't even see that as being an issue.
