VBAC

finding a care provider for VBAC

I'm hoping someone has some advice for me.  I am just trying to get ahead of the game because I am planning on TTC by the end of the year and I am really determined to have a natural birth this time (my son was breech).  Anyway, it seems like in my area the best option is an at-home birth with a midwife, so I've reached out to three in my area via email about a week ago but haven't heard back from any one of them!  I wonder if that's because I'm not yet pregnant?  Am I way too early to be thinking about this already?  I am just really afraid I'm going to get in the position of being pregnant and not being able to find someone who will do a VBAC.  Any feedback is appreciated!

Re: finding a care provider for VBAC

  • I don't think it is too early to be looking for a provider who is vbac friendly.  I think you possibly waited too late if you are already pregnant.  I stayed with my same ob, dd was breech, at the hospital when he was telling me, he said I ccould deliver vaginally next time, so I didn't have to find a new doctor.

You can try your local ican chapter, or call local hospitals and ask.

  • I think you can feel free to interview midwives before you're pregnant. They will do that for free. It's great to have one picked out so you can book her asap after you are pregnant. With an HBAC, you usually don't have a lot of choices and it can be hard if one runs out.

I did a ton of research before becoming pregnant with my VBAC baby and had one in mind, so I called her as soon as I knew.  That was actually for a hospital midwife and we later switched to a homebirth midwife who thankfully had availability.

I agree about getting some recommendations from your local ICAN group.
