teeny tiny fingernails advice?

My LO's pinky finger nails are tiny and hard. They have gotten so long she's scratching me and herself. I cannot peel them abylonger because are too hard, am hesitant to try the baby nail clipper because friend said you can mess up their nail bed. Plus the clipper to too large to get it under the tiny nail. Have thought about soaking the nails to soften ... i.e. after bath time, however she's been getting wet toweled because she hasnt liked the bath. Other suggestions or thoughts?

  • I used the baby nail clippers where I could and then used the baby nail file for the rest while she is sleeping or nursing.

  • I've been filing my LO's nails as well. I'm still scared of the nail clippers too!

  • I use the first years baby clippers. I sit her on my lap with something in front if us for her to look at, big brother, colorful tv show... Then I do it palm facing away and use my finger to sort of pull the skin away from the nail, slide the clipper under from the side and clip. It goes pretty fast. If she tries to pull away I keep going. Even if she gets annoyed its a quick process that'll keep her from hurting herself and us. With DS i did the file thing and I could never do it fast enough and he would get so upset. Even if he was asleep he'd wake up.

  • I also use baby nail clippers. They're amazing! I was always too scared to bite or peel his nails. Do it when LO is asleep or after a feeding when they're milk drunk. It's super easy when they're not active.

That is what my MIL said she used to do with her boys. Have tried with the edge of a much larger nail but wont work on the little finger because too tiny. Tried a baby nail files the ones i got are way too fine for there to be any results unless i sit there for a prolonged time ... rather thick also. Have small regular nail files but I think I would file her skin more than the nail. Hope someone out there has a brilliant idea ....

  • Honestly, with DD1 I bit them off. Pretty gross, but I was terrified of nail clippers. DD2, I'll do it when she is sleeping or have DH do it while I am BFing.

  • I've been biting LO's nails too. I just get a little corner with my teeth and then gently pull the nail away. It's easier than you think.

  • Nail scissors! I think they are much easier to use and I can see his nail better. Today was actually only the second time I've cut them myself! Fortunately I have a great cousin who cut them until got over my fears!

  • There's a great baby nail trimmer (filer) on Amazon called Zo Li that was recommended to me.

    https://www.amazon.com/Zo-li-Buzz-Baby-Nail-Trimmer/dp/B003CN0V7Y/ref=sr_1_4?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1361753595&sr=1-4&keywords=zoli

No clipping needed and it has attachments through 2 years of age.  It's a little expensive ($29) but it has saved me so much stress since I feel like they need to be trimmed every few days.  I would highly recommend.

  • I just use a regular nail file and sort of pull the skin on the tip of her finger back when I file, so I don't get the skin. I have baby nail clippers, but I'm afraid I'm going to hurt her if I use them - she is very wiggly so I might try pps suggestions of clipping while she's asleep. She has VERY sharp little nails and scratches herself frequently, even though I do file her nails..

  • I found that it's not that bad clipping the nails. I like the American Red Cross clipper that has the magnifying glass on it because that way I can actually see where I'm cutting. There's also one with lights on it that might help too.

  • I use a regular emery board. Its more effective than the baby files.

I am guilty of pinching off a piece of skin from DS' toe when he was 2 months old. I was so pissed I threw out the brand new clippers. I filed for like 2 years. Now I use a regular clipper with my 3 yr old guy and he lets me.
