2nd Trimester

Pain

Hi... I'm now 20 weeks gone and am experiencing rib pain. I have looked it up and most places say it doesn't start until your in your 3rd trimester... Is this anything I should worry about? My bump is quite big for only 5 months gone x

Re: Pain

  • Don't worry at all.  With my first, I started experiencing rib pain at 18 weeks and it continued until the end (mine was mainly on the right side).  It was very difficult to sit for long periods of time and very uncomfortable to wear a bra.  My doctor told me that even though the baby is not big enough to be kicking you in the ribs at this stage, all of your organs etc are adjusting and can cause the rib pain.  Pretty soon you will also be getting those kicks and jabs in the ribs too:)  Just to be safe, bring it up to your doctor at the next appointment.

  • it might be your baby is playing karate tricks on you. i am also 5 months pregnant and my baby is kicking me like crazy but no rib pain yet. Speak to your doctor she might have a better explanation.
  • My rib and hip pain started at 23weeks and is here to stay, now I'm 27 weeks. Sleeping is the worst, however what I find 'helps' is sleeping with a pillow between the legs, baths, yoga, prenatal massage, and I sit on an exercise ball at work. It's all about pain management now:) hang in there and you will be holding LO soon.
  • Thanks ladies! Off to physio tomorrow for my hips so might mention it then, little fellas definitely making me aware he's in there!! Good luck to you all x
  • yep yep yep..i have this it started early and just continues to worsen...not sure if im saying this right but costochondritis. It is very painfull, best thing to take is Motrin..but of course this is a no no in pregnancy..so my dr said alternate heat and cold to try and help it.
