Stubborn eater- solids

I started my LO's on solids slowly a couple of months ago. We are at 2 consistent meals a day now. I have a pretty good idea of what they like and dont like, and there are clearly some favorites, and others not so much. Lately, regardless of what I offer, I cannot get one of my guys to open his mouth to eat. He flat out refuses, and its stuff he likes. He will open gladly for cheerios or finger foods, but not for the purees on the spoon. I always give them spoons to play with also and he puts it right in his mouth so its not an issue with that. Luckliy he is my bigger one so I have no issues whatsoever with regard to weight etc, but I am concerned that he seemed to move backwards and just doesnt seem to have any interest in eating. I know that "food before one is for fun", but it still seems concerning. Could it be a phase (I hope), or is this a sign of trouble to come? TIA!

  • I wouldn't even worry about it. If he likes to play with a spoon and has the mashing movement down with his jaw, I'd just give him finger foods. Canned peas and carrots are great, little bits of lunch meat, little pieces of toast and waffle, cheerios, puffs, little chunks of sweet potato, etc. Sounds like he's just bored with the routine- I'd give him stuff to play with that may or may not make it into his mouth and then try to spoon again in a month or so. One of mine refused to eat purees from day one, so we just waited until she was about 8 months and went straight to table food, which actually makes for better eaters in the long run, as far as texture issues go.

You're right about this, so I wouldn't be concerned.  I would take a break for at least a few days and then try again.

Exactly what she said.  I actually started my girls on table food, because one of my girls is so independent, she would not let me feed her anymore.  I started giving them both table foods, she experienced some independence, and now she is a happy little girl who will let me give her some of those things she still needs help with - like applesauce LOL.  I let them have spoons, but....I still help them with the applesauce.  Good luck!  It will be fine.  :)
