Spray Tanning

Have any of you done it since you've been pregnant?  I could swear one of my MW said it was safe.  Just curious what you ladies have heard about getting a spray tan while pregnant.  I have my shower this weekend and I'd love to have a bit of color if possible, but I won't risk harming my baby just to look a little better for one day. TIA!

Re: Spray Tanning

  • I used to work at a tanning salon, and we let pregnant woman Mystic tan. Of course, always check with your doctor, but the amount of DHA, aloe, and bronzer that is sprayed isn't THOUGHT to be enough to harm the baby. Make sure to request nose gear if you are not given any, which you should be, and we always recommended only using the Mystic tan after the first trimester.
The thing to keep in mind is that there has not been a significant amount of testing on the effects of DHA on unborn babies.. Who really wants to test their little one on something like that? So it could still potentially be risky... Personally I'd stick with a little bit of powder bronzer. Pale is the new tan anyway =p

  • My ob says its okay. Even says I can tan in a bed as long as I don't get too hot but I don't use beds anyway.

My OB said the same UV tanning too, but, warned about the possibility of getting dark blotchy spots that could end up being permanent depending on your skin. Then of course gave me the whole premature aging and risk of melanoma talk lol

  • I know people who have spray tanned. I plan on asking my Dr because I would also like some color on my pale pasty winter skin for my shower. I think if its done once at this stage of the game it wont cause harm. Doing it weekly may be a different story. As long as my doc says it ok Im going for it.

  • Oh I forgot to answer one of the questions haha

Yes. I have spray tanned while pregnant. 2 or 3 times in the 1st tri and twice in the 2nd.

I don't have the energy to take my clothes off and stand naked in front of the teeny tiny perfect salon worker while she tries to get the color even over my god awful stretch marks.

    melanoma is lol-worthy?

The word you're looking for is SEX.  I promise.  No, it's not gender.  It's sex.  You're welcome.

My doctor was stating the obvious to me regarding UV tanning, someone who has had melanoma and had surgery for it. I did think it was funny in a dry sort of way that he'd think I'd need "the talk" considering my experience and the fact that I don't tan anymore. But uhhh no I don't think melanoma itself is funny?

  • I did the Mystic once at 9w for a friend's wedding. I was nervous, but just held my breath when the spray came up around my face. I'm sure that did a lot of good :/

I have also heard that tanning creams are OK bc you don't inhale as many fumes.

  • I don't understand wanting to spray paint yourself orange.  It always looks fake.  I think you, collectively, look better pale.  Why not embrace the way you are?  There are lots of gorgeous super pale people like Nicole Kidman and Scarlett Johanson.  It can't be good for you.

I really don't understand exposing yourself to harmful UV rays on purpose either.  Whenever someone on my facebook newsfeed says they're on their way to the tanning salon I urge them to wear sunblock :)  I'm that annoying.

I personally feel that this is the way I am and the way I was made.  I come in one variety, pale.  I have learned to be ok with that.  Why isn't pale beautiful to you?

  • I've heard it's ok and I'm taking my chances on Friday!  My shower is Saturday and doing maternity pics on Sunday, I figure this is one of the few things to help me feel a little more sexy  Big Smile.  Hoping it turns out well.

  • Before I got pregnant, I was totally addicted to spray tanning and did it twice a week. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I cancelled my membership. LIke you, I figured better safe than sorry. However, I did buy a 3-pack of spray tans off Groupon. I spray tanned once for my maternity pictures and I will spray tan for two of my showers. I wouldn't do it all the time, but I think it's fine once or twice. I tried to hold my breath more than usual and not breathe in TOO much of the spray, although it's impossible to avoid it completely. I cannot even tell you how good it felt to be tan again though, haha.

I don't think she asked for people's opinions about how spray tans look, but was rather asking if it would be safe during pregnancy? Just sayin..............
