I'm going to start giving DD a sippy cup to "practice" with. Do you put formula in it, or just water? I can't imagine she will actually drink very much, and I hate waste formula (Alimentum...ugh).
Ever so often, I'll put formula in the sippy cup and give it to S. If he hasn't figured it out after the first half hour, I just pour it into a bottle and give it to him.

Water. It's just for practice and they mostly play with it anyway.
I honestly skipped sippy cups and just gave it to my kids cold turkey on their first birthday and it's been fine. No problems at all with switching from the bottle.
My kid started trying to drink water out of people's glasses and out of his toys in the bathtub so I give him water in his sippy cup. He seems to like it. And I think he's more likely to want to drink plain water later if I get him used i it now!! At least I hope so.

I was thinking about this yesterday as I have started to let the girls play with bowls and spoons while they sit in their high chair.
Any recommendations on what to use for a sippy cup? Bonus points if I can get it on Amazon prime.
It is just like bottles, you have to try a few to see what they like best. A lot of babies won't do sippy cups but do great with straw cups.
For James, I used the Born Free sippy cups because that is the bottle we used and the tops were interchangeable with the bottom. So I could give him formula in a sippy and at the end of the meal, switch to the bottle top and feed him the rest.
Leo uses the TT bottles so we will try those sippy cups first and see how he does.

Me too! She puts that spoon right in her mouth, too. Which is interesting because she hasn't had any food yet at all. I have a Tommy Tippee cup - whatever their "first stage" cup was.

Sometimes we try formula other times we just use water. Yesterday she was having some pooping issues so I put 2oz of juice in it. She hasn't quite figured it out yet. We use Tommee Tippee and have started with the training cups. It's nice because I can put a bottle nipple on the cup and just get her use to the idea of holding the handles to drink. We've also tried both mouth piece styles. She seems to do better with the tip it up style because she seems confused by the sucking style. If that makes sense.

This is what we did with DD and she was perfectly fine. If I did it this early though I'd just use water.
Everyone is different, but I had MAJOR issues getting DS to learn to use a sippy. He hated all of them. I was an idiot and kept giving up for long periods because it was really stressful. Like... he would NOT drink. I tried cold turkey several times and he would literally just not get any fluid. We wasted so much money on different brands and types.
I think the sooner you start the better! Can't hurt. I'd just use water, as others said - it's just for practice. Of course, don't give him a lot, you don't want him to fill up on something with no calories.

This exactly! We haven't practiced a lot, but when we do, this is what we do.
Certainly doesn't hurt to give them some water in the sippy now. DS1 quit bottles cold Turkey at 1 after the flu. He associated the bottle with puking and that was it. He wasn't good with the sippy so I worried about dehydration for weeks. DS2 started with cups around 5 or 6 months. Never had a problem with him. I will start DD then too. I'm never going through a forced quick transition again!!

I've always put water in sippy cups. Even now, for my toddler.
Sippy cups are soon going to be fun to shake, bounce, etc. Trust me, you only want water spilling out of it.

I have no idea! I am just starting to let her practice with her spoon, so I figured I'd give her a cup and see what she does with it.
