Does anyone have a yorkie dog?

My sweet bulldog had to be put down due to a brain tumor and H has his own dog - a lab and she's great and all but I really want a smaller dog.  H said he will get me one for Mother's Day and I'm thinking of a Yorkie.  My neighbors had one when we lived in Dallas and he was the sweetest little guy!  There are some rescue groups close but I'm curious about temperament, etc.   I looked online and it seems like they are good family dogs but I'm curious what your experience is with them.  Thanks!

Re: Does anyone have a yorkie dog?

  • I have two good friends who have them.  And while they love them they really dislike the breed.  Lots of medical issue which is from them being inbred so much.

I'm partial to mutts, I have a Terrier Chi Weenie.   She's my awesome pound puppy!

  • See that's I think why my bulldog had the issues he did.  H told me he wanted to get another lab.  That might be the route we go, I just wanted a smaller lap dog.  Our lab is great, but she's his dog and all the dogs before have been my dogs so I miss the companionship.

  • I live in Dallas right now, I know you didn't ask but just wanted to say it... My roommate in college had 2 yorkies, so I lived with 2 for 3 years. They are great dogs, her dogs got along well with my dog, but I have to agree about medical issues. If you are rescuing, hopefully they have seen a vet and have a full report so you know what to expect. I am a proud mommy of 2 pit rescues, one is almost for sure pit, and the other is a mix of who knows. Rescue animals make wonderful members of the family. When we adopted, we knew exactly what we were getting, as far as health and temperament, which sometimes you never know with a breeder.

  • I am not at all against a rescue, I'm just always concerned if people are honest about why they had to give up the dog in the first place.  That's always been my hesitation.  If I didn't have kids it would be different and less of a concern.  I've always felt more comfortable with puppies because I know how they were raised and I can train them to not be food or toy aggressive, etc.  They will be raised together so it's something I am more comfortable with.

  • Yep, Yorkies are yappers...well, any that I've known are. And they require grooming! So, if you don't mind a yapper or having to get them groomed...

  • I had a cocker spaniel so we are not against grooming at all.  I don't remember my neighbors dog being a yapper at all!  Maybe he was just so cute I didn't care!  :)  H said see you need a lab.

  • I would think going the rescue route might not work for you.  We found our dog at the pound.  But a rescue had already tagged her to be picked up.  So after her quarantine period they picked her up and then we adopted her via them.

It worked out cause they did all the dirty work (fixed her, dewormed her, etc).  So we just picked her up with the vet.

But they were really strict about who could adopt.   We didn't have a house visit but they don't adopt out dogs out to families with small children.  And they specialize in being a small dog rescue.

I'm old school I think going to the pound and finding a dog could work well for you.   You'll get a good idea on temperment (aka if they are a barker), etc. When I found Foxy (my pupper) I'd be to the pound twice.  And then I found her and while all the other little dogs were yapping away and barking she was just sitting there quiet looking sad and pathetic.  :)

  • Wanted to comment on the small dog idea. We have a golden, and he's wonderful. But I've never had dogs before, and quite frankly have always been a little afraid of big dogs, so I really wanted a small dog. DH wanted a golden from the get go. I ended up coming around, and our golden turned out to be only about 55lbs full-grown (as a male!). We may have gotten lucky, but if you can't bring your DH around to a smaller dog, you can always see about getting a smaller version of a large dog. Breed rescues will likely have some, or you can see the parents if you go through a breeder. Ours was the runt, but his parents were on the smaller side as well.  You're brave to want to get a puppy and have a toddler around at the same time!
  • With my H's lab we had a puppy and a newborn so I'm not too worried about puppy and toddler together!  :)  H wants a small dog too, but his lab is so great with the boys and is big enough to withstand the roughhousing so right now we might need to stick with the larger dogs.  H wanted a golden a few years ago - his best friend as a kid had one and he said it was the best dog ever.  H's lab LOVES DS #2 - like I see a serious friendship budding there.  So I'm thinking our oldest son should get some say in the new dog.  He remembers our cocker spaniel so that might be a breed he likes again.  Our lab is the largest out of the litter - she's over 70 pounds and she's tall.  She's just giant.  So we aren't against big dogs, I just wanted a smaller snuggly one, but to be honest my 55 + pound bulldog was a lap dog so size really doesn't matter!

  • My grandma had a Yorkie when I was growing up who was great.

My MIL has 2 Yorkies. She doesn't take care of her dogs like she should and one of them is bitter. He's just a PITA now and he growls at anyone besides MIL and FIL. I don't think he's ever bitten anyone though. The other one is a rescue that tried to bite MIL through his cage and she decided to bring him home. He's bitten everyone except DD, for some reason he is super attached to DD and tries to attack if he thinks you're hurting her. His attacking is jumping at you and nipping.

Prior to the rescued Yorkie, they had another one. He was super awesome.

  • We have Yorkie and Matlese.  They are yappy dogs, but we love them, and they do great with DD.  Just a warning on rescues (and breeders, for that matter), they might not be willing to adopt a small dog to a house with young children.
