Natural Birth

Birth Story of Aaron Patrick

Foreword: This is really long and detailed. Hope you don't mind :-)
Also, "A" and "C" are my midwives. I didn't want to share their real names.

I had been having Braxton Hicks since 20 weeks and pretty strong ones the few weeks leading up to my due date. I even had a few days in the 38-39 week period that I was timing contractions, but nothing ever stayed consistent.

39 weeks and 5 days (by afternoon time) was when DS#1 arrived. This time, at 39w5D DH and I decided to go out to dinner at Chili?s and I ordered a jalape?o steakhouse burger just for the heck-of-it. We got home, put B to bed and nothing was happening. I even felt depressed, cried, and told DH ?This is the longest I?ve ever been pregnant! I don?t think it will even happen this weekend.?

I had planned out things to do during labor since with DS#1 I had lots of ?early labor? and time to pass. I planned on cleaning, setting up the birth tub, having snacks and tea ready for our midwives and even thought I?d bake a birthday cake! Boy, was I mistaken!

I decided to go to bed around 10pm. I started having some Braxton Hicks that were ?different? so I started timing them as I was laying there and they were 10 minutes apart for about an hour. They then got closer together, about 5-7 minutes apart for about an hour. I decided to wake up DH and tell him I thought ?this was it?. I told him I was going to shower to see if they slowed down at all. While I was in the shower I had several contractions. I continued this way for a while and at 1am I had to wake up DH to help me get through them. At some point I threw up and was regretting my dinner decision with the jalape?os.  I got in the shower one more time and was realizing I had to start moaning through them. It took me by surprise because it wasn?t for a good 6 hours into labor with DS#1 that I needed to start being vocal. I got out of the shower pretty quickly because I started getting intense back labor. DH was putting TONS of counter pressure on my low back through my contractions. At around 1:30 I sent a text to my midwife to tell her she should come over. She arrived a little before 2am and I was having contractions one on top of the other and DH couldn?t put enough pressure on my back.

I told A ?I feel like I am getting no breaks!? she said ?That?s what happens when you?re in transition!? J She was the picture of togetherness and so calm. I didn't think that it was even possible that I was in transition because it took around 12 hours of labor with DS#1 to be at that point. Everything was happening very quickly and at times I had a really hard time staying focused and staying on top of my contractions. They were majorly taking over! It helped when the midwives and DH would talk to me and touch me to remind me they were there. I had some moments of ?Ah! Am I doing this right? Is everything ok?? and they would just keep saying ?you?re doing beautifully, just perfect. Keep doing what you?re doing.?
Some time between contractions on the floor and on my bed, my water broke. After that the contractions spaced out a bit and I was able to actually get a little break.

By 3:30am I was feeling pushy and I guess DH said to me ?Breath Honey!? and A said ?She?s pushing!? Again, we were so taken aback that we could be to this stage already, especially since A hadn't checked dilation the whole pregnancy/labor! I was pushing on my bed for a quite a while and it didn?t seem to be working well. A suggested I move to the toilet for a few contractions. She said ?After this contraction, let?s move?. So when it was done, I ran to the bathroom! They all said I ran really fast! Haha J
The toilet was a good pushing position because I was probably only in there 15 minutes and A said ?Stand up, here comes his head!? so with the support of DH and A I stood and then she told me to breathe and not push for  a minute while his head came out.  Definitely felt that ?ring of fire? but it didn?t last long and then his head was out! The rest of him was born and I thought he fell in the toilet!! HA! Of course he didn?t even come in contact with the toilet but I had heard more water splash (from amniotic fluid). A caught him at
4:32am and I got to hold him immediately (Which I didn?t get to do with DS#1). DH said ?it?s a boy!? but I was so shocked that I had a baby on my lap since everything happened so fast I didn?t hear him at first. He had a very short cord (13 inches) and I started shaking a ton from the rush of hormones. He was so cute and tiny but SO slippery! They waited a few minutes and then cut his cord there in the bathroom and then helped us both back to the bedroom. I delivered the placenta about 20 minutes later.

Aaron was able to nurse and snuggle for a while before A weighed him in at 8 lbs. 10 oz. and he measured in at 19 ? ?long. He was almost a pound larger and inch shorter than DS#1 was!

I wondered if I had any tearing and if I?d need any stitches this time because not only was Aaron bigger, but his arm was up by his shoulder at birth. First A checked and then C checked me out and said ?You?re good. You don?t need a single stitch!? I started bawling immediately (happy tears). I had terrible tearing with DS#1, the stitching hurt more than the labor, and I took 8+ weeks to heal. It was quite traumatic for me. I was so thrilled and now, just days after the birth, I feel wonderful and have no pain ?down there?! My worst complaint is a sore back and my head cold I seemed to contract after he was born.

A and C finished some paper work, started laundry, got everything cleaned up and left around 7am. DS#1 slept through EVERYTHIING and got to wake up at 8am to a baby brother. He grinned when he met him and touched his arm. It was a very special family moment together on our bed.

Birthing at home was empowering, beautiful, intimate and FAST! We were able to rest in our own bed, have all our own clothing, toiletries and ?amenities? of home. I wouldn?t change a thing about how it all went. I am just praising God for everything...including our beautiful new baby boy: Aaron Patrick
