Parenting after a Loss

Sleep Question

DS has been sleeping pretty well for an 8 week old I think. He usually goes down between 8:00-8:30 and will sleep until 1:30-2:00. This stretch of sleep is deep and quiet. From there I feed him and he goes back down pretty quickly. However, from 3:30/4am on he is still asleep but groans, cries, and grunts loudly for hours, usually until about 6 or 7. He's done this now since 3-4 weeks old. We can't sleep over the noise as it is so loud you'd think he is in pain. I've tried picking him up to soothe, make sure he's been burped, etc. Sometimes I try to move him to his own room but he wakes up within 10 minutes.

He sleeps in a RNP and doesn't like to sleep flat. He eats well during the night and is swaddled.  Any advice or is this just something we'll have to deal with for awhile?

Re: Sleep Question

  • Could he be gassy?  Maybe give him some gas drops?  Matthew sometimes woke up grunting like that and gas drops seemed to help.  I give him gas drops every night before bed now (and have been doing that for a few months now).

  • If you've confirmed its not gas and don't suspect reflux, it's probably just how he is. Sometimes babies are just noisy sleepers.

  • DD was always a loud sleeper and would have the same type of tendencies.  Quiet deep sleep in the beginning of the night and then lighter, louder sleep later.  We had to move her to a seperate room.  I couldn't sleep and it was grating on my nerves.  We propped the crib up on one side so she wouldn't be flat on her back if that helps any.

Yeah that's what I've been telling myself especially since we don't have any other reasons why.

Yup, exactly! I'll have try propping his bed to see if that helps. I'm not quite ready to move him out of our room but maybe just for his second stretch of sleep.

  • DS started doing the same thing around that age.  He would grunt and make so many noises in his sleep that DH and I were barely getting any rest.  That's when we decided to move him into his nursery.  We used a crib wedge so that he wasn't flat on his back and it worked wonders for us both.  I think we were waking him just as much as he was waking us because after the initial crib transition (maybe 5 rough nights) he started sleeping much longer stretches.

  • Babies can be just loud sleepers, so moving them to their room might help.  This transition was very difficult for me, but very good for my family.  Everyone slept much better.

It can't hurt to try.  I just ask b/c even when M burps, he's sometimes still really gassy.  I think it's just worked its way further down and he needs to fart. Smile

  • The muppet is the same age and it sounds exactly like what he does. Sleeps from 8:30 - 2 eats, sleeps till 4 eats and starts grunting like a pig or cries in his dreams. DH moves him to his swing at about 5 am when he gets up so I get from 5-7 in a quiet room. He doesn't grunt as much in his swing from 5-7.

I think it is gas, or he is just in REM sleep so he is dreaming about all kinds of stuff, but it is his pattern and has been for a while, and I feel I just have to deal with it. I have also noticed that I feed him twice throughout the night but he doesn't poop till early in the am. He may be sleeping too well to do his business until it gets backed up b/c when he does it is A LOT!

So, I guess I don't have any advice, but it sounds exactly like our house with an 8 week old.
