Re: ashley?

  • No need for a nickname.  Ashley is a pretty name.  It was definitely popular when I was a kid (I'm 27).  But, you don't hear many people naming their child Ashley anymore.

  • My little cousin's name is Ashley and we always called her Ash or Ashie. It just kind of happens! But now that she's turning into more of a tomboy we've started calling her "Smashlie". lol!

  • No nickname needed.

I named my children Avery, Asher, and Audrey specifically because there are no natural nicknames that occur to people.  I abbreviate their names to Ave, Ash, Aud when I text sometimes. But I call them by their full first name. Sometimes by both first and middle name

  • I like the name Ashley!  I know quite a few, but no little girls and think it would be nice to start seeing it again.

I don't think nicknames are necessary. Though keep in mind that even if you dn't call her Ash, her friends could end up calling her that, especially when adolescent-/teenage-aged. ALSO: As a pp said, you could end up giving her a nn that has nothing to do with Ashely as her fn.  She could have red hair and you call her "Red"... things like that happen all the time!

Haha this is what we called my cousin along with Ash. I never thought of it as morbid

  • I like Ashley, it's a sweet name but not too cutesy for an adult. I've called my friends by that name Ashley, Ash, Ashie, Smashlie, Ashtray and Ash-hole. (the last two, needless to say aren't good ones for little girls lol)

  • I know someone who spelled her daughter's name Elisabeth because she hated the nickname Liz and wanted her to be called Elisa. Baby girl is 16 now... And guess what her friends call her? Liz. You can push people towards a particular nickname, but just keep in mind that if Ashley grows up to like Ash, she's going to call herself that no matter what your naming intentions were.
  • I don't think Ash is morbid. Not do I think you should give a kid a name with a preconceived NN let it come naturally when you meet your baby.

  • totally dont understand the thing on this board with NNs--IMHO kids grow into their NN ex. I have a friend named Scooter cuz when he was 3 he ate a whole box of scooter pies;  my nephew's NN is Juju cuz he couldnt pronounce his name as a child, my DD's NN was given to her a few days after she was born cuz of something she did (she's almost 5 and we still call her by it).  Yes, people will call Ashley "Ash" you cant stop it.

  • My best friend's name is Ashley, We actually gave each other nick names when we were in college hence, My name is Emma, she calls me Emmakins, I call her Smashley
Blessed with double the love. C and J born May 2013
  • My daughter is Ryleigh and people try to call her ry and she corrects them. So no. I don't think a nn is important.
  • I don't think having a nn is a necessity.  Technically DS could have several of them, but we always call him by his full name.

  • My name is Ashley and I have almost always been called by my full name.  Occasionally people called me Ash but it was pretty rare.  I don't feel like I missed out on having a nickname.  FWIW, I have always liked my name :)
