switching to a big boy bed

Any suggestion/tips on the transition?  My son is 23 months.  He has never climbed out of his crib but jumps in his crib.  I have given him time to explore his new room.  I have put his favorite blanket on his bed.   We tried it tonight and he fell asleep for about 20 minutes and then got out of the bed and was banging on the door crying.  When I went up to put him back he screamed and stood up.   TIA!

    do you have anything else familiar in the new room? when we moved my son was just barley 6 months so idk if this is similar, but we took all the stuff that was on the walls at the old house and put them on the walls at the new house, used the same night light, the same blankets and pillows, even used the same lavender and chamomile airwick plug in so that it would seem as familiar as possible...
