Apparently, I am doing it wrong.
At our two month visit they gave us a huge packet of paper work to help us prepare for the next milestones we should start to see around 4 months. Rolling, sleep training, ect.
One of the things it says is that at 4 months BF should be stretched to 4-6 feedings a day. I should be stretching out D's feeding intervals to 3-4 hours. And I should phase out night feedings. Because over feeding your baby can make them fat, apparently.
It also recommends CIO.
I have a few more weeks until D hits 4 months. Maybe my opinion will change by then, but I'm pretty sure I will keep sticking with on demand feedings.
Re: BF, you're doing it wrong
No, you aren't doing it wrong! Baby needs, baby gets. I really didn't think bf babies could get over fed..
But, do you think there are some moms who let their baby graze too much? Feed when baby is actually bored, etc? My packet from the pedi said something like that... and also that night feedings could actually be just a habit and to soothe first, and start tapering down the time/amount of feeding...
I sort of read it as babies at this age are capable of going that long between feedings, and overnight... but, as always.. every baby is different and you are the best momma LO's got... stick with what works for you!
Yeah, I'm sure the information is done in a generalized way to cover as many scenarios/parenting types as possible. After reading it though I had to wonder if I WAS doing it wrong. But D attacks the boob every time I offer, so I figure that means he is really hungry and not just comfort/boredom.
I know some women do over feed their infants. There is a culture here of latina women who really fatten up their little girls starting at a very early age. They talk about it like it is something to be proud of, who's little girl weighs the most at the youngest age. Not sure if they are BF or FF though.
.
Hmmm not exactly sure wanting a healthy baby is a culturally specific trait. I am Latina, my baby was a preemie and yes I want him to gain weight.
Maybe your broad generalization about Latinos has more to do with living in a place where babies can be healthy & not deal with malnourishment and high infant mortality due to lack of resources? Just saying.
Otherwise I too FOD.
Maybe I did not word it properly. There is a neighborhood here, where they overfeed their little girls. On purpose. They find over weight babies/toddlers to be cuter than healthy babies/toddlers.
I do not mean to imply that all Latinas do this, but just this segment. I apologize if it came across as a generalization for all Latinos.
PersephoneRose,
I'm sorry! I was kinda being a little overdramatic, long day--but no excuse!
It recommends CIO? That's crazy at this age (or any).
Good thing people don't usually read those handouts :P
