HOT DOGS? IS IT TRUE???

Ladies I've heard from many sources that Hot dogs are not safe to eat? Even if their kosher? Has anyone heard the same thing? Confused! I love hot dogs!

Re: HOT DOGS? IS IT TRUE???

  • Heat it and eat it.

ETA: There's a lot of bad stuff in hot dogs (nitrates, etc), so I'd probably spring for the better brands.. but I'd do that in my normal non-preg life, too, and not everyone feels the same.

  • Just like lunch meat, they're fine if you heat them through. I eat Applegate Farm's lunch meat and hot dogs (heated of course). They're organic, nitrate free, antibiotic/hormone free, minimally processed, grass fed beef, humanely raised etc...

Make sure they are really cooked and enjoy

Yep! They can have high levels of nitrates but I doubt you are eating them every day (or are you????). So as long as its just every now and then, you are good. I get so irritated by women who say "I can't eat hot dogs because I'm pregnant". Sure you can. Just heat them fully and don't eat them every day.

  • I'll be the first to admit that as soon as the local hotdog place opens for the season I'll be there weekly.

Mmm, I could go for a Costco hot dog right about now! Polish dog with lots of relish and sauerkraut! And ditto PP, heat and enjoy.

Ahh! Why'd you have to bring up the polish dog with kraut! Thank goodness I'm in my pajamas or I'd be on my way to Costco right now.

. Mmmm! I second the Applegate Farms hotdogs! More specifically, the beef ones. I personally think the other ones are nothing to get excited about. Ahhh. I feel a DH food run coming on!

  • I would probably think twice about eating a hotdog (or any street meat) from a hot dog cart on the street, but a thoroughly cooked hot dog is fine. I always buy the fancy nitrate free ones anyway because I'm a hotdog snob. Regular cheap pork hotdogs make me want to hurl even on the best of days.

I literally cannot eat enough sauerkraut this pregnancy... I loved the stuff before but it's really gotten out of hand.  Now I'm craving a costco hot dog too!!!

  • My NP said that the problem isn't bacteria risk but that there are so many preservatives in processed meats, so heating it doesn't really make it much safer. Disappointed : I love lunch meat!!

Yes this is why I stay away from lunch meat and hot dogs because of the nitrates and other additives I don't want in my body. There has been some studies that link nitrates to cancer especially in children

    This is a good article

  • I plan on eating a lot of hot dogs, cooked over an open fire, along the river this summer.
