Internet Bashing of Mothers drives me crazy !

there's a big story here atm about a presenter on the radio & tv who was caught smoking while pg - it's all over our news

I just read this great article about it - and loved this line:

It?s a curious truth, and one that speaks to the heart of women?s place in society. We are by and large expected to have babies - and yet when it comes to looking after them both in utero and beyond, we?re considered less capable of making choices on their behalf than people we?ve never even met.

Does anyone else find it annoying that people judge so much - is it the readiness of social media that encourages this? I'm also all BLEH about that fb page ripping into the people who posted that video of the baby who woke in her carseat to dance to Ganham style - saying that the way the kids were restrained was wrong and judging all over the place. I just feel like MYOB! It's not my place to judge some person I've never met.

Anyhow, rant over :)

  • I think people like finding something, anything to make them feel superior to others. And if they find something, like smoking in this case, then it's easy to whip yourself into a frenzy and latch on like a shark, or a wildebeast, or some other scary animal. The anonymity of the internet just makes it easier to judge without being judged back.

    Sad.

  • I think in general parenting is something people feel they can comment on. Man o r female, with or without social media.

It's the strangest things. Either other parents comment knowing how annoying it is, or people with out kids comment, and what do they know.

Oddly enough, unlike other things some cultures being more blunt than others in things like weight, looks or whatever commenting on the way people parent seems to be found in every culture.
  • I think there is a huge difference between being judgmental and recognizing when people are acting irresponsibly or dangerously.

Smoking while pregnant is dangerous to the fetus. This is not a judgement. It is a fact. Scientifically proven and established fact. People are not being judgmental to point this out. Now, if they decide they should be the all-knowing authority on whether someone is a good or bad parent based on sensational media reporting, that is where judgment comes in.

I also think that if a child is in danger then pointing that out and taking action is the right thing to do. It is not judgmental. Since when are we required to let anything and everything go without being allowed to say, "That's not ok!" If you see someone hitting a kid at the park are you going to say something, or call the police? Or will you just shrug and think, "I don't want to judge...It's not my problem."
